As one of the lucky few people that have a holiday weekend (thank you Italian-American lobby), I thought this would be a good time to start my livejournal. runningwave has been twisting my arm … ah … I mean enthusiastically encouraging me to do this for some time. I haven’t quite decided what I want to do with this account. I’m not really the type to post detailed reports about my life on the web. I may try using it for writing about my more exotic travels, random musings, interesting weblinks, and occasional rants. Or I may get bored with this in a week and move onto something else.

I decided to use an obscure Tolkien character as my livejournal username since I’ve been rereading and (in a few cases) reading for the first time Tolkien’s unfinished stories about Middle Earth. http://home.earthlink.net/~dbratman/tolkien_order.html has a suggested reading list of one late, relatively full version of each published story found in the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and the 12 History of Middle Earth Books. Not something I’d recommend unless you are at least mildly obsessed with Tolkien’s work, since most of them are from drafts and have not really been edited (other than in a scholarly sense). However, for the right person, there are some real gems here (and I’d add one story that is not on the above list, “The Wanderings of Hurin” from The War of the Jewels).

In any case, there are a truly staggering number of Tolkien names that have already been taken on Livejournal, particularly of the elven variety. Not sure how much that is due to the movies or just the particular livejournal community. So, I decided I needed a REALLY obscure character and chose Telchar, the smith who forged Narsil (currently shown being reforged in the Return of the King trailer) and other weapons and armor with rather interesting histories.
