Never figured I'd be so grateful to be a sort of involuntary homebody. Hell only knows what would've happened if I'd been downtown pounding pavement or something today. I got the news late, outbreaks of violence all over the world, talk of the dead walking the streets, more from the internet than any mainstream source; shows you what they're good for, I guess. All the big news websites are being pounded to a pulp, of course, so there's not much telling what they're reporting. The cell phones are down anyway, so I can't tell how Sandie is, or William who left here shortly before I found out, but so far it's been quiet here. I guess we're far enough from the cemeteries, and the hospital a little way up the road must be having a good day. Apparently word's gotten around, though; outside it's like the video streams I remember watching of post-Katrina New Orleans ... well, minus the water. Dead silent here, if you'll pardon a grim-but-unavoidable pun, but if I walk a short distance so I can see to the south, I can tell there's smoke rising from downtown.
Looking around the house I'm trying to account for anything that might make a good weapon. I suspect we won't be so safe come nightfall, if not sooner. There are a few display swords that wouldn't be likely to do much even if they had a real edge, some lamps that'd at least keep a few flesh-hungry dead at bay for a short while, but I really don't think this place would keep up well in a siege, so I guess 'run like Hell' is more in order. I'll have to go up Pecos and at least see how Sandie's doing, but the safest thing for them would be to lock down and open the door for no one, so I may just have to take Alice and run for the hills. Wish us luck...
