The visualization that can be viewed by clicking on either the image of Katrina on the right or Rita on the left shows all 21 named storms during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, from Arlene to Wilma. Orange and red colors represent ocean temperatures at 82 degrees F or higher - the temperature required for hurricanes to form. Note the significant warming of Gulf waters in late August. Temperature data is from the AMSR-E instrument on the Aqua satellite, while the cloud images were taken by the Imager on the GOES-12 satellite.
No one is going to forget 2005 anytime soon. The sheer amount of natural disasters this year paints a dismal portrait into the future of our environment, with potentially horrifying effects down the line. Hopefully initiatives like this can help us learn and prepare for such an event later on. The video is incredible - absolutely beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
