Andromeda's Supermassive Black Hole

Sep 23, 2005 17:36

Data from the Hubble Space Telescope has confirmed what scientists have been suspecting for some time now - that in the middle of our galaxy (not the system Earth and the other planets are a part of - that's the solar system) lies a black hole of brobdingnagian proportions, with a tonnage to the tune of 140 million suns. The black hole is surrounded by blue stars, which are actually what led to the confirmation of the hole's existence.

Careful analysis of the Hubble data revealed that the blue light is from hundreds of the fast-burning stars that are orbiting a relatively small and dark region at speeds that make sense only by the presence of a monster black hole.

Space news always make me feel so small. Don't you wish that when you die, you get to watch time and the universe unfold and grow? Watch every little detail, watch stars get born and die, and see what happens millions and billions of years from now? Wow. Just wow. That's one show worth dying for.
