THIS REMINDS ME OF A SMASHING PUZsobbb

Jan 08, 2011 01:07

So it's wholey possible that every kind of spoiler imaginable from the Layton series is running rampant in this post

because I just finished Lost Future and therefore the 'series so far' in English anyway

shaking and crying, guys

So I'm going to type a load of boring sap blab story while I stop blubbering other the ending which will take a while waaaaahhhh

I was thinking as I was playing Curious Village that the series wasn't going to hold up to my high expectations. People who like Ace Attorney like this series too and vice versa, so I was expecting great things. At first I actually thought "meh the puzzles are fantastic but everything else isn't really winning me over", since the plot for CV didn't draw me in and the music was pretty standard. I liked the characters, though. Thought they were cute, and the whole idea of them being robots that someone made somehow makes it all the cuter. I don't know.

Pandora's Box I THINK I liked a bit more? Since the puzzles started to include the characters some more (the one with Luke and Layton's order put a big smile on my face), and the plot seemed to be much more interesting. And there was some of the music I quite liked, pretty much everything from Folsense onwards. And the tea minigame. Oh how I love that minigame and the pictured scenarios.

"perhaps we can use it to clean the floor"
"let us write down this recipe so that it may never be conceived again"

that and I thought it was quite fun, too.

but there was
really only one main problem

PROFESSOR LAYTON AND LUKE DECIDED TO LOOK FOR THE DOG
PROFESSOR LAYTON AND LUKE DECIDED TO INVESTIGATE THE TOWN
PROFESSOR LAYTON AND LUKE DECIDED TO GO JUMP OFF A CLIFF TOGETHER

just

did Level-5 really need to do this

But of all things, at this point one of my MASSIVE issues with the series was Luke and Layton's relationship. I was curious to see what it would be like, whether they'd be like bros or ~BESTEST FRIENDS~ or hell maybe father and son or whatever. CV didn't show much, and then all of a sudden in DB

my name is Hershel Layton and I am a professorrrrblerp
oh cool and who's the kid
well he's-
I'M HIS APPRENTICE!!111one
.....yeah he's one of those things

EVERY
TIME

This actually REALLY bothered me, as funny as it always was. Mainly because.....their interaction was practically non-existant (imo) save for the PLEASE SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER attitude with puzzles!!11one and Luke's adorable admiration of the guy. Like in Eternal Diva when he's pretending to be Layton and going "iiiiit's you" and pointing randomly everywhere in his office and then Layton walks in and he's all embarassed lolololololl

But I ADORE character interaction. And since Flora uninterests me and Chelmey and Don Paolo shenanigans were rare, I was putting all my attention on Luke and Layton. So you might have guessed that when in Lost Future, when Luke ran off to be sad by the statue at one point (and even when they first see the statue - I was in total theorymode throughout the game, accidentally coming up with like a million fanfic ideas in the process and the kid in the statue eventually dying made me worry about Luke for a moment ahahaha), I was really like 8( for him and I lapped the whole thing up because I am sad. And then he was like I'M GONNA BE MOVING but Layton is like LOL OKAY, PUZZLES WOAHHHH

and I was just
sitting there and staring at my DS
wat plastered all over my face, you could see the individual letters and everything

I love it and hate it at the same time, it is just so ridiculous

But...yeah, Layton himself. I dunno. Playing through the series I didn't know what I thought about him. I found it kinda hard to gather what kind of a person he was. Best taste in hats ever. Obsession with puzzles. GENTLEMANLY THINGS EVERYWHERE. And solving everything without giving you much of a chance to. I didn't even know if I liked him or not.

...but then Lost Future feels like it's getting closer and closer to the end. Future Layton isn't actually Future Layton, which I thought SUCKED at the time because it would have been interesting to see what compelled him to be so interested in time travel. I assumed this was the case and thought maybe he wanted to bring Claire back. GUESS THAT'S ANOTHER FANFIC!! And we see Layton after being literally beaten up by, essentially, politics. Standing in front of the blazing inferno after the lab explosion with a kid beside him. A later scene showing Layton trying to shake some damn sense into the kid ie not!Luke, hitting him and telling him not to go after his parents otherwise he'd get himself killed while the kid just cried and cried.

These were the first times in the series that just.... had such an effect on me. I was like... damn, they weren't kidding. This is the best game.

And what struck me even more were the final scenes, when Luke was leaving, it was the exact same thing
I was looking forward to it (what am I saying), was hopeful for it since the scene with not!Luke was very similar and just
Luke's crying and Layton tells him gentlemen try not to make a scene
...but then he just says
"I'm not a gentleman"
and runs over to him and sobs just like not!Luke did

AND THEN

THEN

LAYTON CRIES TOO

I WAS LIKE A FOUNTAIN OF SALTY DESPAIR BY THIS POINT
THINKING DAMN CLAIRE WILL MAKE HIM CRY AND TAKE OFF HIS HAT AND STARE INTO THE SKIES AS IT STARTS TO SNOW, BUT I BET HE'LL BE STRONG AND DEADPAN FOR LU-
OH
OH GODDDDDDD

just sent me over the edge of bawwwwww it was just so yes. I never saw the closeness the two of them had. And those few scenes just told me everything I needed to know.

And Luke's seal is cute. Everything about the little guy is cute. I love this game.

The 'sequel' to LF, though, doesn't have me as interested as Spectre's Flute does. I went to find the trailer for it and oh my god I want it to be localised so badly. It looks like, storywise, it would be just as good if not better. Hopefully Capcom will be a good influence on Level-5 with their love for ALL of their fans, not just Japanland's, and make them localise things sooner. >:]

DESPITE how good LF's plot was, though, I'm still glad that Takumi is writing the plot/scenario/script (people don't seem to be sure) for the crossover game. I still think I liked AA better, for random things such as the great localisation and constant good plot as well as the general length of each game. They were longer than PF, and I think mostly more interesting, but I realise now that the Layton games have great plots too. So I have high hopes for it - it's like AA with MUCH more thought required and Layton with more character and cleverer writing and plots. I have a good feeling about it.

It just needs to suck and then ruin my dreams forever.

tl;dr Teki loves this series forever and will probably be VERY interested in its fic+fandom now. It's been a while since I've gotten into a new one. Think I've needed it.

it also seems like a series that would have a hilarious fanon
off I goooo, research time....or bedtime, that works too

professor layton, aaaaaaaaaaa, my opinion matters, waaaah, tl;dr, ace attorney, woop woop, oh mah gah
