Austin damage report

Just got back from spending a few days in Austin for Kat's 21st and doing a little pre-move bar scouting (did I mention here that I found an apartment and I'll be moving 09-01? Well, I did and I am.). Here's a brief report on some bars.

Bull McCabe's (Red River) - We showed up here about an hour after Kat turned 21, and we like it. Nice quiet little Irish pub. Just us, the bartender, and two other customers. Good whisky selection, decent tap wall, and a small smoking area out back (drinking in Austin is kinda weird. A bar without smoke is like a hospital without harsh lighting. It doesn't feel quite right.). Seems to be closed on mondays, though. We'll be returning, and if'n you're ever out drinking in Austin and have as little patience for the dudebros and sorostitutes as us, I reccomend it.

Club Deville (Red River) - Despite the name, not a club at all. This fucker falls firmly in the "lounge" catagory. The interior looks like a goth club and was dead as a doornail monday night, which is fine with me because there were comfortable chairs, dim lighting, AC/DC on the jukebox, and I didn't hear a single goddamn Bauhaus song. The main draw seems to be the fact that it has parking and this huge back patio area (crowded, of course. The smoking ban has beat the fuck out of bars with no patios.) enclosed by cliffs. Fucking cliffs, really. Not big cliffs, but definitely cliffs. A good starting or ending point. Only local brews on tap, decent bottle selection, and the bartender on duty poured Kat the most dangerous long island I've ever seen.

Cheers Shot Bar (6th) - Awful. Damn the tout that tempted me with $1.50 pints. Packed with the 6th crowd, only crappy light beer on tap, loud, bad music, just generally crap. Only redeeming qualities were the large back patio that, while filled with dudebros, was pretty quiet, and the bartender performed the highly illegal act of making some Flaming Dr. Peppers, fire breathing and all.

Whisky Bar (5th & Lavaca) - Good bar. Good feel, good decor, good music, good beer selection, fantastic whisky selection. I think I done found my bar. Gotta go out front to smoke, though.
