i went to the K-OS open forum last night and was thoroughly delighted by the songs that he and (Namedropper?) guitarist ripped out. the sick jazz chords and progressions (stuff i'd never seen anywhere) and simply put, "mad rhymes".
the open forum (for me anyways) was significantly more of a disappointment. there was a lot of talk of spirituality, a lot of Socrates spouting, and your run of the mill glossy bullshit. next to this was much discussion about the "state of hip hop" and how one should go about "pimpin' the industry" (right back).
as a social scientist this is what i've discovered, and quite possibly the most important discovery i've made so far.
PEOPLE ARE OBSESSED WITH PERSONAL POLITICS
period.
whether one references the [hip hop] "Heads", the Straight Edge Punks, or trashy Christian New Rock IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO PERSONAL POLITICS.
to me, this is no friggin' surprise. people recognize that there are problems in the world, but that they also have problems- problems of the personal kind. then the metaphoric association sets in that once you deal and cope with your personal problems you can go out and challenge outside problems.
this i must say is a false assumption.
to live is to be in constant conflict. i refuse to believe any one goes a day without having some sort of personal conflict, problem, or tension. it isn't always a struggle, but there is always tension.
however problems BEYOND the self exist regardless of whether one is in a state of struggle or not.
hmmm...maybe i'm being unclear. i should just stick with my observations.
firstly, if hiphop were to be "saved" there would still be people suffering from debt enslavement -whether it be in the so called developing world, or the developed. Nobody seems to realize that "buying conscious hip hop records" doesn't equate to jackshit. none of those "heads" last night with all their Socrates' and bizzarist uses of Einstien's "relativism" (in actually, postmodernist) realized that they are simply feeding in the status quo. that which they adamantly assume they have transcended.
and i would wreckon this is the same in the punk movement.
conclusion: spirituality as people "consume" it is simply a MYTH. the fact even if they have come to a state of "enlightenment" they are still practicing the art of consumption, ignorance, and arrogence.
solution: instead of trying to package all this "consciousness" as the answer to the issue of "bling bling" perhaps these people should stop confusing real politics with music. in other words, spout me your rhymes and spit out your beats but please shut the hell up about the state of man.
