I have a child in college

Wow. That feels so weird to say. Though, she doesn't check into the dorm for another couple of hours yet. Still, she left for school yesterday at too-damn-early o'clock (with a big ass suitcase that weighed 49.5 pounds LOL). Her other bags were lighter. LOL ( Read more... )

It goes by SO DAMNED FAST! It's not nearly too early to be searching out scholarship opportunities.

oh yeah, definitely. I mean, we've been saving since she was born (almost literally, every $$ present we got for her was immediately put in her college fund) but still WOW it's expensive. School just started for them Monday, but she's already under orders that before Oct she has to have gone to the college resource center and started looking.

Yeah, my kid's freshman year included a major series of projects that were pretty much teaching them how to college hunt.

Oooh, I wish schools here did that.

Most don't here, either. Her magnet school was all Gifted/Talented and 100% of the student body goes on to college.

Ah, that makes more sense then. We switched from private to public for HS because we were in a better neighborhood and the schools here are very good, but it's all relative I suppose.

Then again, anything is better than the middle school that, during the tour where the principal was showing off her school, talked up the fact that unscheduled the police visits to the school were the lowest they'd been in years and were down, DOWN, to only 3 a month (I think that was what it was, honestly once she started going on and on about police visits my brain went running for the hills)

We never did private school (well, not until college :-). But HISD has an excellent magnet program. There is at least one police officer assigned to every school, but they don't always have more to do than direct traffic. They've been a good deterrent in the schools she went to, and a good protection for the ones in worse areas.

This one had two cops assigned during the day as well.

You've probably said and I've forgotten, but what college did you guys wind up choosing?

Bagels and donuts and deli food and pizza and god, everything that NYC has to offer.... Why did I leave NY again?

LOL

Our local bakery is family owned and they brought their recipes from the old country by way of NY. Can't wait to see if their bagels stand up to what she finds.

And she's all excited over getting to go to the original Katz's Deli. :-) It's her favorite place here.
