LOL! As I don't know that there are any future plot points related to this, I'll answer you. :-)
Shifters evolved alongside humans, but humans breed much faster and quickly became the dominant sentient species on the planet. Shifters, not being stupid, eventually realized they needed to blend in or risk being hunted down and killed. Shifter parents parents adopted human naming conventions in pre-history. There are some weird shifter colonies in odd corners of the world who reject the human focus of shifter society, but they merely substitute it for blending in with penguins or something. (Nobody wants anything to do with those weird penguin people. :-) So, yeah, names reflect human society... and since shifters are born hermaphroditic and only gender during puberty, shifters tend to favor male names... at least in patriarchal human societies. Shifters view gender very differently from humans. The only ones it really matters to are those who may be allowed to breed.
And now I have this mental image of Johnny Cash's song 'A Boy Named Sue' and what happened to that poor shifter who became a male at puberty after his parents saddled him that name. :-)
LOL!!! They also have *very* few taboos about sex and almost all of them have to do with reproduction and politics. :-) None of them have to do with sex, for example, with humans. It's kinda like going to lunch with a friend.
The only thing with the carrion eaters is non-carrion eaters don't want to smell it. :-)
The penguin people are just considered to be like some sort of weird cult or something. Having someone from your pack run off to join them is something not discussed in polite society. :-)
This evening has, so far, been spent out with my kid discovering a "field" (really broad esplanade and the space between the bike path and the street) we should never walk through while wearing flip-flops. :-)
