Hometown Meme

I was browsing through my flist for a bit (enjoying my coffee out of my new mug :-) and I was hit by something. No matter where you live, there are always places or things that are cool about your town, but visitors rarely ever know about them. So, tell us something (or several somethings) cool that the tourists never see or wouldn't know about. It ( Read more... )

Our state medical insurance has a premium of $4/month. It's something like $200 i nOregon and $300 in Idaho.

I no longer live there, nor is it really my home town, but it's probably the most interesting place I have lived ( ... )

I love hearing about your neck of the woods. :-) It's so incredibly exotic to me (and as you've been down here, you may well understand why). :-)

Even though we're a small town, we actually get day trippers from the Dallas area. Not as many now as when a local woman spurred a downtown revival that reopened the movie theater and several other businesses, but we still have them, just not by the busload. No seriously, there were busloads ( ... )

I would *so* love to see that theater. :-) Impressive that the trains come that far out. You planning on making the A-KON trip again? ;-)

I'll PM you a link to pics of the theater.

The trains don't quite reach us yet, but I expect they will very soon, as the Metro area is creeping and crawling towards us. Still, drive 45 minutes, hop on a train, and you miss the worst of the traffic but can link up to a lot of major sites.

I forgot to answer the A-KON trip question. D'oh!

Cousin's Kid was wanting me and my friend to go along with the manga/anime group again, but so far it's only him and a couple of his friends going. All are legal or will have a parent with them anyway, so I'm hoping our services aren't needed.

I like the genre, but I'm not into it enough to really appreciate it like the kids do. Last time, after a tour through the dealer's room and such, my friend and I spent a lot of time wandering the shopping mall that connects to the con venue, and camping on a couch in one of the lobbies.

We basically waited around for "I need an adult!" calls. We only had two, both involving newly purchased fake weapons and needing an adult to keep them since we didn't have a room to stash them and security gets twitchy.

I would have stayed in the dealer's room more, but felt really weird looking at X-rated slashy manga when one of the kids could come around the corner of the dealer's table. ;)

Your corner of the world is exotic to me! Oceans! Salt Water within a few hours drive. Hurricanes! Year round camping! It won't be for a little while, but I do want to come back down that way. Maybe see Four Corners, New Mexico, that way a bit more too :-)

OH, man, the San Juan Mountains near Albuquerque are *lovely*, especially in winter. :-) Speaking of Albuquerque, there are some terrific restaurants there, too. :-) And it's a short drive to Santa Fe and all the galleries and so forth.

Next time you're down here, we *will* get together and go to Galveston. ;-)
