Which Daniel is Mine?
princessofg has asked some fascinating questions about Daniel and it got me thinking. She's looking at the range of Daniel characterizations in fic and trying to get a handle on what they are. (She's ignoring obvious bad!fic.) You've got Inexperienced!Daniel and Snarky!Daniel and Pissy!Daniel and Pragmatic!Daniel and... and... and... Most Daniels encompass more than one facet (otherwise you're heading into bad!fic territory), but I see where she's coming from. Different writers latch onto different aspects and even different aspects from different points in his time line. It's an interesting discussion and I look forward to her next post on the topic.
See, the problem I discovered is that I can't figure out "which" Daniel mine is. It hit me that the writer is often the last to know anyway. :-) So, those of you who read my SG1 stuff, tell me, if you can, how would you categorize the Daniel I write? If my Gen!Daniel is different from my Slash!Daniel, that's fine. If I write multiple Daniels, that's fine, too. When this came up the other day, I went out and read three of my gen stories: Battle Cry, The Yard Man and Words of Beauty/Love/Life. I see those Daniels as the same one. If you don't, that's cool, I certainly won't be ticked. I'm firmly in the camp that the writer often is the worst judge of this sort of thing. What matters isn't what the writer intended, it's what the reader *got*.
