Catching up

Bleah. Tired. Long hours in a test cell, going rounds with a 16-cylinder gas genset. I'm pretty sure I'm winning now, but the emissions calibration was a pain in the dorsal orifice.

Last weekend was wonderful, though. Fri night, Laurel watched the boys and M and I celebrated Cinco de Mayo at Cinco de Mayo. We left the house at 6:30 and didn't get our food til like 9:00, but hey... more time to sit and talk and echarnos bebidas mexicanas. We had one of the best conversations we've had in many months, about our fears and frustrations and insights from our respective counseling sessions regarding our respective emotional dysfunctions, etc. Good times.

Saturday I went to an all-day dulcimer workshop at Dickson Mounds. Had never been there before; it's a really pretty drive down south following the river, and the archaeological museum there is quite well done. The workshop consisted of a beginner class in the morning, and an intermediate/advanced class in the afternoon. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I'm actually pretty good already - better than most of the people in the advanced class, which is less of a compliment to me than a sad commentary on the dulcimer-playing community in general. I also saw how much I can benefit from a good teacher.

Also on Saturday I had a really good conversation with my brother about a troubling family issue. Felt like I had something truly substantial to contribute, and had the lately-unfamiliar feeling of being relatively in-tune with what God might have for me to say to somebody. So that was encouraging.

Well, small group is starting, so I'd better stop being anti-social.
