From Old English, myrige, or maybe Common (Vulgar?) Germanic, murgijaz, which means "short-lasting". Personally, I go with the "short-lasting" bit, it has connotations of "making time fly", or something. It's where you get "mergelijc" from. The idea of 'leasure pets' didn't really become popular until the late 1900s, mind you. Back in Rome, dogs were considered a pest, if anything, and cats were never domesticated. They did, at one point, crucify a dog.
