Just saw this on fatale's journal:
The nation's largest telephone and cable companies have a vision for the Internet's future. Verizon, AT&T (formerly SBC), Comcast, and Bell South want to create a privately run and branded "pay-as-you-go" Internet, making everything we do online a "billable," revenue-generating service. This just makes me ask so many questions. The first one being: how? Seriously. There is SO MUCH out there that it just seems impossible to me for anyone to get a handle on it and try charging for it in that sort of way.

Plus, it seems absolutely detrimental to the future of the Internet to take it to this level. I mean, half the reason the Internet is so wonderful is because it's largely a free source of so much information.

I can't say I'm surprised that some assholes want to make money from it, I'm mostly just... confused.

Yeah. I don't know how they intend to make it work, but gah, the idea of them even trying to rankles me.

I can't imagine it will work. If they try charging people like that, people will just simply stop using it. The world existed before the internet and can exist without it. It just seems stupid.

*nods* It does seem stupid. Especially considering I work from home and my job is completely internet based. Can you imagine the bills that would rack up?

Most of my friends in Australia have service like that; after a certain number of page views, downloads, etc, their service turns off for that month. It's ridiculous, and a pain in the fucking ass.

Yeah. It would be very unfortunate if we switched to that and in the middle of a shift for work I get cut off for the rest of the month. Bah.
