A reality cheque from the parentals

Ha! My parents rock (sometimes)! See, they've both read the Harry Potter books, in fact everyone living under this roof has. Anyways, I was talking with them about some of the crazy stuff in fandom since the new book came out. See, they don't really care much about Harry Potter outside of reading the books and watching the movies. Fandom is just one of those things that doesn't even qualify as a blip on the radar. So we got to discussing the great ship war of Ron/Hermione vs Harry/Hermione.

The parentals could not see how ANYONE could think Harry/Hermione would happen in the books. My stepmum even said, "It's been obvious since book 1 that Ron and Hermione would end up together." Oh, how I heart you for your non-fandom obscured views. She also made the point that they are children's books and that something like a relationship would not be hidden within the novels, it would obviously be there at the surface. My stepmum is convinced that canon H/Hr shippers live in a universe different from ours and have lost all sense of reality if they're refusing to continue to read the books and/or participate in fandom because something that never was going to happen didn't happen.

There was also bafflement from them on how anyone could think that the characters were out of character in HBP. This is why I like having parents who read and love the books but are not jaded by fandom. It's like a reality cheque for me to make sure I still at least have one toe firmly planted on the ground. ;)

In other news with the parentals, my dad is now using Firefox. I'm pleased and helped him install and get it set up. I'm glad I stuck around though. See, on May 7th I had installed and uninstalled the program on his laptop so I could get online while watching CoS with the GoF special stuff out int he living room on the big screen tv. Well, I went to Lizard's Corner and was showing ravenpan all the smutty art. I uninstalled without erasing the history because I never once expected my father to install the program. I also didn't think it would retain that info, but it did. Ooops. Thank god we realised this before he could snoop around through them and see what sites I had visited.
