NJ Supernatural Convention July 8-10th 2011
First I want to note, that there are some minimal spoilers in this post, however I did use spoiler tags, so if you want to read spoilers, just highlight the text. :)
DAY ONE
Before the Convention Started
Ate lunch outside, tailgate party at my car. A guy with a 1967 Chevy Impala drove by us. He parked a few cars down from mine. Elizabeth encouraged me to get a picture. There were a couple other fans talking to the owner and I asked if I could get a picture. The only difference between his car and the actual car is the interior, his was blue. It will definitely remain one of the highlights of my weekend. Not only because it is the show’s car, but because I love classic cars in general. I’ve seen many classic Impalas, but never a ’67 and never one that wasn’t a SS.
Gabe Tigerman
He was the first guest of the convention. Very funny. He said he doesn’t like playing pranks on people. It makes him feel bad. He was on Punked and he said he made Jesse McCartney cry. He said if he had Andy’s power he would put gay porn in Kripke and Misha’s heads. Gabe decided his followers on Twitter will be called Gabey’s Babies. When asked if he was a Dean!Girl, Sam!Girl, or slash fan, he said he was a Dean!Girl. He also said if he could play any other character on SPN, he’d play Dean.
Kim Rhodes
This was her first convention. She said that she would be back in season seven. She had a great first impression of Jared and Jensen, she would do anything for them and she loves them. She said Jensen was an excellent director. Kim hopes that when (if?) her character dies, that she goes out bloody. That her last line will come from her decapitated head. She would like her character and Bobby to get together. He needs a woman who knows how to use a gun. She said if her character from Suite Life was on Supernatural, she’d find a way to sleep with Sam.
Corin Nemic
The poor guy was very jetlagged not sure of the day. He gave long thought out answers to fan questions. Spoke a lot about B movies and independent films he has been in. Didn’t know he was going to be a demon at first. Corin was not happy to see his character killed off, he almost didn’t read the rest of the script, but figured as an actor he should, found out he was back as a demon only to be killed again.
Karaoke Party
Matt, Richard, Kim, and Gabe (Corin was there, but was still jet legged and cut out early.) were in attendance. A lot of fun. Richard and Matt claimed that they got married on the flight over to NJ. Different people came up to sing. Celebrity guests joined in on some of the songs. Elizabeth and I kept getting closer and closer to the stage throughout the night. We both made eye contact with Gabe. I was close enough that the people on stage could definitely see me.
DAY TWO
Steven Williams
He shared with us about how he came about wearing feather earrings. Influenced by a character on 21 Jump Street, didn’t come to be until he played a 17th Century ghost pirate. Very open and honest with people. Had a lot of ideas of the world.
Rick Worthy
This was his first Supernatural convention. (Maybe his first in general, I’m not sure.) Elizabeth actually shared an elevator with him. He was very excited to be there and grateful to the fans. Acted out a scene as him playing himself with a girl, coming out of a bar and running into himself as the Alpha vampire.
Matt Cohen
Wore a shirt with a maxi pad taped to his back, because of something that apparently happened to him last year. It was the one year anniversary of his first con. (Which I saw him at last year!) He had hurt his ribs a couple of weeks ago filming a part in a movie, but he still went over to each fan who asked a question and gave them a hug.
He spoke about the concept of getting “Iced” which involves someone giving you and Smirnoff Ice and then you have to kneel down like you were worshipping it and you had to drink the whole bottle in that position. He said he hadn’t even been in NJ for 15 minutes and that happened to him. Matt said his honey moon with Richard was the convention with all of us.
He spoke about playing a cowgirl in a web series. (These are those short videos that have been circulating around the internet with him dressed in daisy dukes and a bra washing a horse.)
His dream episode would have young John and John, one teaming up with Dean and the other with Sam. He joked that young John would say, “Damn I look good!” to his older self.
He spoke at length about how upset he was to miss the Haiti trip that was done by Misha, Random Acts, and some fans. He had to do an audition for a part in 90210. He kept being asked back, so he did not get the opportunity to go. Matt just found out Thursday that he didn’t end up getting the part. He said in the future, that he will do what his gut tells him. He’d rather do something to help other people than to help himself.
Richard Speight Jr.
A fan brought a bear dressed like Gabriel. Richard took it and had the bear answer the question. She wanted to know where he thought Gabriel is now that he’s dead. He had the bear answer that he was in stripper heaven.
He walked throughout the audience during the panel spending some time in the back where people like me were sitting in general admission. He said he was doing that so people in the crappy seats could see him and then he mentioned that the people up front could only see his back on the screen when he did that.
A fan asked a random question about Gabriel and if he was a Care Bear. Richard said, if Gabe was a Care Bear he’d have a stripper pole on his belly.
Another fan asked him about the Pepsi Max Commercials. It was not planned by him to snap his fingers in the Snoop Dogg Pepsi Max commercial. It was originally supposed to be a switch he flipped, but the director didn’t like it and had him do the snap instead. When the commercial was finished he said, “You know, Supernatural fans are going to notice and catch on to that.” He said Pepsi is amazed and really happy about all the support they’re getting from Supernatural fans.
When asked who had more fangirls, Matt or himself, Richard answered Matt. But, that he had hotter and cooler fangirls.
He also told us the Misha underwear story about how Misha’s underwear accidentally ended up in his trailer.
Photo Op with Matt and Richard
The line went very quickly. I was nowhere near as nervous as last year when I had my picture with Misha. Actually I was very calm. When it was my turn, I got up to them said “Hi and how’re you?” to Richard and got and hug. Then I did the same with Matt who was wearing a shirt that said “Free Hugs.” He asked what we were going to do for the photo and I said, “Uh just going to stand there.”
So, we lined up and Matt was like, “Can I do this? Grab a piece of your hair?” And I said, “Sure!” So he did. I couldn’t tell, but I think he was holding it up toward his face. Then Richard pointed to my hair that Matt was holding. So, I’m not even 100 percent certain what the photo looks like. After the picture was taken, Matt said, “I love your hair. Great color job!” I smiled, said thank you. Then thanked both of them for the picture. I get compliments on my hair all the time, but I must admit it’s really awesome having Matt Cohen say that to me! :)
DAY 3
Jared Padalecki Photo Op
I got in line around 8 45 and the end of it went down the hallway. While I’m in the actual room where Jared is taking pictures, some of the sweetest things I saw was a little boy getting his picture with Jared and then running off in excitement, and Jared petting one woman’s service dog. The girls behind me were really nervous, I was trying to stay calm!
When it was my turn, (in retrospect I’m so happy I remembered to talk to him at all!) I walked up to him and said, “Hi!” Jared said, “Hey sweetie.” I hugged him for the picture, and yes it is true, he gives great hugs. After the picture I looked straight at him and said, “Thank you!” (This is a big deal - the eye contact and everything with me being shy.) Then he smiles and winks at me. After that, I know I’m red! I must say Jared is such a sweetheart.
Jared Padalecki
During the no minimum bid auction, Jared opened one of the side doors near the row Elizabeth and I were in. (General admission, which got pushed back a few rows for the final day.) Needless to say, him opening that door and waving and blowing kisses to everyone, disrupted the auction just a little! Then, Adam the host joked that they were not auctioning off a date with Jared. So then Jared comes on stage and strikes a pose, like they are auctioning off a date with him!
After the auction Jared’s panel starts. Jared said hi to New Jersey in that fake Jersey accent. He told us how he was glad to be there and how Jensen was sorry that he couldn’t make it, but he was directing an episode. Jared told us that season seven would be scary again. He said he hadn’t been scared by the show since season one and that some of the scariness has to do with Sam’s memories of hell. A fan asked if he thought Sam having his memories back would affect the character. Jared said yes, and that Sam would be dealing with his memories from hell, we would see some of the things he saw in hell and what he did there.
Another fan asked if he was a woman, what six things would he carry in his purse. He said an iPod, iPhone, tampon shaped lipstick (because you don’t need tampons everyday.), a brush, and hair spray.
Fans were asking him how he goes about playing multiple versions of Sam. Jared jokingly replied that he only had four different looks when he auditioned, so the writers made different Sams out of all of them.
Another fan asked him about the Impala. He said, if the Impala could survive season one, then it could survive season 6. He said Dean would be working on it. Then, Jared went on about some montage of Sam and Dean fixing the Impala, but I think he may have been joking completely about that because as he went on about it, it started sounding more like the opening scene to a porno. I said to my friend, “Jensen’s going to kill him for this!”
Jared and Misha
A fan was asking if Jared could photoshop himself in a picture with any person, who would it be? So, Misha decides to stand on a chair. At this point Jared (and security I’m sure!) are worried that Misha is going to fall! So Jared is holding on to Misha’s legs and he’s trying to reach the top of the convention banner to hold up a piece of paper of Jared’s face to photoshop Jared out of the picture. Misha said, “That’s old school photoshop!” When Misha gets of the chair he says to Jared, “I’m not tall enough, you do it for me.” Jared said to us, “Y’all almost saw something scary!”
Misha Collins
Misha brought up a bunch of people on stage to teach them Tibetan throat singing. Apparently it came to varying success.
He talked to us about his son, West. He said West is 9 months old and he is a little disappointed that he’s still acting like a baby. Misha said he thinks that’s just West’s way of acting out. He also told us that his son now makes faces like he’s going to throw up when Misha feeds him, but then after a few seconds he smiles real big and holds his hands up like it’s the best food ever!
One girl told Misha she had a list of things that she wanted to do before she went crazy or died and one was making a handshake with Misha. So he brought her up on stage and he came up with some crazy handshake that could never be duplicated.
He asked about some of the other things on her list, one was seeing Saturday Night Live, live. Misha told us about the time he almost got to see SNL live. He waited in line for hours with his wife, then girlfriend and another friend. They got tickets and came back later to get into the show. Vicky and her friend got in faster pretending they knew someone on the show. When Misha finally gets to the front of the line, he can’t find his ticket. So, he wasn’t able to go. Years later, his wife confessed she had his ticket!
Richard Speight Jr Second Panel
Brock came out and “Iced” Richard. Richard said he would let Brock kneel because he’s old.
Richard once again walked through the audience so people in the back were able to see him. He once again spoke about the Pepsi Max commercials. He said that Pepsi was amazed by the response from their commercials, but who was Gabriel?
Richard said if he had Gabriel’s powers he would prank Jensen and Jared by making him short. He confirmed that he’s never been pranked by the Js and thinks that the real prank is on us, that Jared and Jensen never prank anyone at all, but everyone thinks they do, when in reality they probably only prank each other!
Jared Padalecki Autograph
Amazing wait, but I was not surprised! When I got up to him, once again I managed the, “Hi!” and “Thank you!” This time he smiled and said, “No. Thank you!” I had joked with my friend while waiting that I wanted to tell Jared to sign Sam’s butt on the picture. Of course I wasn’t really going to do that. However, when he was done signing, I noticed that he did in fact sign right over Sam’s butt!
Brock Kelly
Brock auctioned off a signed bottle of Smirnoff Ice that he was “Iced” with. It went for $350.00, I think and he was going to donate the money to the charity Jared endorses, “A Dog’s Life.” He was surprised that people kept bidding on it. He was like, “Are you guys joking? Are you just kidding around with me?”
A fan asked him if he had the opportunity to play young Dean again, what would he want to be doing? He said he would like it to be him and Colin Ford on their first hunt together without Dad.
Another fan said, she couldn’t read what Brock had written on her photo and if he could tell her. (I really think she was joking though!) Brock laughed and said, “Oh I know what it says, ‘I save lives! I’m a HERO!’” He said it the exact way he said it in After School Special. He said he thought that Dean was probably influenced by Rocky when he was younger.
A younger fan asked him if he always wanted to be an actor and Brock said that when he was a kid he wanted to be a Teen Aged Mutant Ninja Turtle and Batman.
Waiting to pick up Photo Ops
After Brock’s panel the only thing left was Misha’s photos and waiting to pick up photo ops. At one point Brock came out where the fans were and gave a ton of girls hugs.
I met one of my online friends while I was sitting around waiting. Me, her, and my friend Elizabeth all got in line together, which was VERY long and spoke with some other fans around us. I do have to say it is kind of fun to meet so many different personalities who are all passionate about the show.
Finally, I got my pictures, (Not too terribly hard to find with the bright red hair!) and Elizabeth and I made the ride back home to New York.
Let me tell you, I had so much fun! Going to a convention is definitely more than worth it. Now I'm thinking, Chicon 2012! I still have to meet Jensen after all! :)
