It was on a train. I was approached by an American tourist and her small child.
tourist: ... we've left Sheffield, right?
me: ... yes
tourist: where are we now?
me: Doncaster
tourist: WOW, that's a long way away!
tourist's kid: don't be silly, we can't be in Doncaster! people are still speaking English!
Me and my friends also had to explain football hooligans to a German tourist once. She clearly associated England with football hooligans and nothing else. I was also on a tram once and overheard someone talking to a tourist and saying 'And this is West Street. ... everything you've heard about drunk English people is true.'
