In recent years, I’ve noticed a terrifying trend in people. They have forgotten what it’s like to speak, never-mind write, proper English; and I don’t mean using marginally improper grammar, no, I mean aborting the unborn fetus of language seconds after conception. The idea that the various acronyms and contractions of the Internet should transcend the wire into reality baffles me, because here, they serve no goal or purpose short of assuring your audience that you learned to speak in the comments section of YouTube.
What boggles my mind is that this isn’t the first generation to grow up with technology, but it seems to have become the dumbest. Having been exposed to the same cultures and the same mass idiocy of the Internet some of us survived, speaking and writing as well as any other, while a second group embracing the same content chose to adapt it as a whole into common dialog. Does the attraction of a quarter-million views on the Internet somehow translate into real life popularity? No, those videos are mocking humanity, not broadcasting a social guideline, and to treat it as such is an insult to humanity and a blatant display of personal idiocy.
My fear is not that this is a temporary trend, but that the overwhelming majority of giggling, acronym spewing, YouTube raised excuses for human offspring are destined to survive in the modern world, and actually make it into the professional scene, and at the unfathomable extreme, reproduce. The sheer dilution this would offer the gene pool could be felt for generations to come. And to contemplate the parenting styles of someone incapable of producing a sound without reducing it to a string consonants while jumping up and down is to teeter on the verge of absolute insanity.
So I beg you, please stop this before it gets out of hand. Use words, sentences, and thoughts to communicate before you forget what words your OMGs, WTFs and ROFLMAOs even expand to. And if you ever find yourself uttering anything that resembles a forum post, please, for all of us, eat some glass and shut the hell up.
