When his little brother was born, Jeremy thought that Richard was the most boring baby ever. All he did was cry, burp, ruin his nappies and cry a bit more; their mother spent most of her day rushing around after little Richard, leaving Jeremy to play on his own. The first few weeks were a nightmare for the nine-year old boy - their first Christmas was about the baby rather than him, and once school started again it got worse.

After two months, Jeremy decided that Richard wasn't going to be any more interesting than he was then, and definitely no fun to play with when the baby-sitter was over. He also figured out that no-one was going to mind if he went out playing for a few minutes - looking back on it, it was almost sod's law that he fell out of the tree and broke his arm. The baby-sitter got him to hospital fast enough and met Jeremy's parents at the door. They were carrying Richard in his car seat, and whilst they saw the doctor's about their eldest son's X-ray Jeremy was left alone in the room with him.

"This is your fault," Jeremy mumbled to Richard; the baby looked at him and tilted his head. "If you let me play with Mum and Dad this wouldn't have happened. I'd have been spending time with them instead. Stupid little Hamster." And then the baby giggled.

"It's not funny you know! You're a little rodent, it's not fair that you get all the attention at home these days!" Jeremy yells at his brother angrily, but Richard simply smiles - a toothless, gummy grin that somehow makes Jeremy smile. "...you are quite cute, actually. And you like seeing me cock up, don't you?" And when their parents come back, they see the two boys finally getting along, and they comment that Richard loves his big brother.

The first time Jeremy saw red over his brother was when he was fourteen and Richard five.

Jeremy was in the park with his friends when all of a sudden, his little brother ran across the green in tears. "Jeremy, you've gotta help me, please!" he cried, burying his head into Jeremy's tummy.

"Hang on Hamster, what's going on?" he asked, kneeling down so they can see each other eye-to-eye. "Why're you crying?"

"He said he'd break my toys, then he'd break me!" the little boy wept,, wiping at his eyes with his jumper sleeve. "Jeremy, he's gonna come after me and he said he'd get Mindy as well!" (Mindy was the little girl that lived next-door-but-one; Richard would do anything to spend time with her, including her tea parties with Isaac, her stuffed rabbit).

Jeremy looked over Richard's shoulder and saw them approaching; a gang of four of five boys, and their leader with a face that Jeremy knew too well. "Piers. Hamster, go somewhere else for a moment, please?" Piers was one of the boys in Richard's school, known purely as the bully of the playground.

He ran up to Piers, and yelled his name before punching him in the face. The other boys froze on the spot, too afraid to do anything now their leader was on the floor. Jeremy picked Piers up by his blazer lapels, punching him again on the jaw and kicking him in the crotch. He stared him in the eye, the fury bubbling under his skin, before growling lowly.

"You dare upset my brother again; you dare. It'll be worse next time."

The first time Jeremy saw green over Richard was when he was twenty-three and his brother was fifteen. They hadn't spoken in a while, not since Jeremy had joined his first national newspaper and Richard has settled down for his O-Levels so when he saw Richard with strange red marks across his neck he knew he'd missed something big.

"Oh come on, you've got to tell me about her." he teased playfully one night, throwing Richard's socks at him. "She's got you ensnared I can see."

"Who said she was a girl?" he replied nonchantly and Jeremy blinks. He'd never thought that Richard was gay - not that he hadn't imagined it. Jeremy thought it was something all brothers did; thought about it purely to tease the other boy of the family. "He's actually quite nice, you know."

Jeremy released a breath that he didn't know he'd been holding. "Is he from school?"

"No, actually - church altar-server. And yes, I know it's ironic, but let me finish." Richard sat up on the bed. "He's called James and he lives a few streets away. Few years older than me though..."

"How old?" Jeremy asked, slightly concerned.

Richard replied with "Twenty," and Jeremy's jaw dropped; he knew something wasn't right, and this James was probably going to break Richard into pieces. "James is a good guy, you know - maybe the age shows he's experienced or something, because he's just a genuine man."

"He's ancient compared to you!" Jeremy yelled, ignoring the feeling in his stomach. "Richard, just leave him, NOW."

"No!" Richard stood up and glared at him. "I know you're my brother but for God's sake give me a fucking breather!"

"He can't love you Richard, not like -" But Jeremy didn't get to finish, because Richard had stormed out. And then that awful feeling came - the one where he felt protective and loving towards his little brother, but at the same time knew there was something else underneath that; something brothers shouldn't feel.

Fucking hell, he thought to himself. And he knew it was going to get worse.
