John doesn’t know why Rodney dislikes children, because they certainly like him. As a matter of fact, Jinto is his number one fan (okay, that’s actually Madison, but Jinto runs a close second, followed by a long line of other adoring Athosian brats). Rodney’s like an unwilling magnet, trying to shake away things that are naturally attracted.
Speaking of which, John can hear Maddy’s laughter even from his place in the kitchen. He peeks out the window, greeted by the sight of Rodney pushing her on the swing-her face is lit up, laughing, red hair matching the autumn leaves. Rodney looks happy, too, and that makes this whole vacation worth it.
Just as John's about to let the curtain fall back into place, a hand touches his arm. It’s Jeannie, craning her neck to see what has him so transfixed. She smiles at the sight of her brother and daughter, and her grip gently tightens, telling John she knows exactly what he feels for Rodney, and that she’s glad.
