It’s a question that strikes in the middle of paperwork, during some routine duty on some routine day. It bothers him, makes his teeth itch with uncharacteristic curiosity, so John asks that night as he walks Rodney to his room: “Have you ever been in love?”
Rodney only smiles, and once he’s sure the hallway’s clear, leans to press a kiss against John’s mouth. They may be new to this whole relationship, but John has quickly grown to love Rodney’s gestures of affection.
“Once,” he replies. “The first and last time,” and John wants to demand who, but the answer comes with a startling clarity that leaves him lost for words.
