After my grandmother passed away, my large extended family (my dad has six brothers and sisters) spent the day in her house going through her things, reminiscing and taking things home to remember her by. My grandfather died almost 27 years ago and among many things, he was an avid amateur photographer, with his own darkroom in the house. He took many, many photographs of his family and work. He also collected older pics of his family and my grandmother's family from the late 19th century. His photographs and negatives (as well as photographs taken since his death) were in several boxes that we all went through. Everyone took a few pics of themselves and their families, but this left hundreds of photographs and negatives from the late 19th c. through current times.
Since my RL job involves working with archival special collections like photographs, I stepped up to be the family archivist and took all of it home with me. It was in no order whatsoever and so I've spent time (and will continue to do so for quite awhile) starting to organize it all.
I chose one of my favorite pics to highlight, but wanted to give you a peek into the treasure trove of history I have of my dad's family. The pic right in the center of the pile of photos is my grandmother and grandfather in the late 1930's. I love that grandma is styling pants in an era when skirts would have been more common.
