eidetic memory? wtf IS this?

i have NO idea what this is or even whether it's common. i mean i know lots of people who complain out of the blue that they have such-and-such song stuck in their head, but to what extent does that happen for them? do they remember bits and pieces, their favourite words? or do they hear the score and the lyrics, in perfect time and perfect pitch, as accurately as if they were listening to it right at that moment?

for me, at least, it happens like that. at this very moment, i'm not listening to but i can HEAR two things, alternating back and forth: random sections from the four seasons, and the song in disney's cinderella where all the mice decide to sew her a dress. i can understand having the singing mice stuck in my head, since i watched a bit of that earlier this afternoon, but vivaldi? i haven't listened to vivaldi in a little while, but it's playing VERY VIVIDLY and quite accurately between my ears right now. i think it's 'summer'. i can hear every note of the violins, i can slow it down to count out exactly how many notes there are in this repeated phrase, and so on and so forth. and then it switches back to the singing mice, the same part, just the way it plays in the movie.

i was never a musical genius. i had some training, then gave up out of boredom and being too young to concentrate, and i can more or less make acceptable noise on three instruments. i can't read sheet music without trying very hard and i have even less talent where identifying notes by name and stating in which key the piece shall be performed. i don't automatically memorize EVERY random song on first hearing it, but i can remember the exact sound of any song i know, many movies or parts of movies i've watched (i can recite 'the nightmare before christmas' from beginning to end, no problem, and i haven't seen it in a while), etc. when i get something 'stuck in my head' it's like i left the radio or television on and i can't ignore it.

movies tend to be easier because of the visual aids; i learn easiest with images and i can memorize those very well. but music? no visual aids, and yet they stick like GLUE. like SUPERGLUE.

i once impressed a friend's boyfriend by indentifying 'dirty harry' by the gorillaz, after he played less than one second of the start of the song. i didn't even stop to think. kinda scary. :o

maybe that's why i like to keep listening to music (and why my dad complains about me ALWAYS wearing my headphones). i don't do it to be antisocial (usually), but if i'm not actively listening to something, something else will start playing itself on a loop inside my head. sometimes it's relaxing, sometimes it helps with boredom, and sometimes it's downright aggravating. most times, though, it's distracting.

just wondering whether this is what people mean when they say they have a song stuck in their head.

oh, and last night my sisters were watching the auditions for canadian idol and this australian dude came up with his guitar and sang a song that consisted entirely of "this song's gonna get stuck in your head, this song's gonna get stuck in your head". that was SO CRUEL because it worked on me for the next hour. i hate him.

...great. now 'der prophet' is stuck in my head. i have NO MUSIC PLAYING.
