help!
I'm trying to recommend some good high school level sci fi books for a friend to get a little background in something other than fantasy. I have a series in mind, but I can't for the life of me remember what it's called! It's all about how the human race started off an interstellar war by using ancient technology to produce suns out of gas giants, it also involves these tree things that can communicate with people and with each other no matter how far the distance is. I simply cannot remember the name of these books, nor their author. There were AI robots who were from an ancient era who said they didn't remember anything from their past masters, which is a lie because they helped to destroy their past masters. There's also a race of aliens who have basically reached an evolutionary wall; one of their main characteristics is their space military, which is little more than trained in parade formations but have no piratical battle applications.
