Thank god it's friday. It's amazing how much my outlook on this job has changed. Mr Shenk retired and sold his pratice to two other lawyers, one of which is a good guy in his own way. The other one is a fucking stuckup power hungry asshole. And it's not just me who says so, it's the general consensus, the guy's a prick. Maybe once I get home I'll ( Read more... )

Arizona is a right-to-work state. They can fire you for no reason. If that happens, you aren't necessarily guaranteed unemployment. Count your blessings - a lot of people don't have jobs, and need them.

Right-to-work only applies if I've signed the paperwork for it stating so. As far as I know it's not a given that a person can be fired without just cause, and the only paperwork I filled out was a tax form. Hell, they didn't even set my hours down on paper. Besides, when I accepted this job I was also in the process of being hired as a shift leader at krispy kreme doughnuts. The only reason I took this job instead was because it was a lot closer to home and they were offering me an immeadiate position, as opposed to krispy kreme who was dilly-dalling.

And I know I'm not necessarily guaranteed unemployment, I was just saying that this job went from being a totally awesome thing to being a daily frustration.

Right-to-work is an implied-law system. That's just how it works in AZ, it's not something they have to tell you every time.

Then why have employees sign right-to-work contracts?

Probably a courtesy. It's a notice that they have the right to make use of the policy.

In short, if you didn't sign one, then you're either under-the-table which means they don't claim you and you're not going to get Unemployment, or they did their paperwork incorrectly and you're not going to get Unemployment.:P

If that were the case I don't think I would have to worry about taxes. But it's a moot point anyway, as I didn't get fired. Not yet anyway.

did a spot of research about the whole right to work thing. Turns out the right to work laws are intended for workplaces that make use of Unions. The actual law is, of course, drawn out and confusing for laymen such as us. But I did find a good summary which seems to coencide with what I read of the law ( ... )
