there's something quietly nice about walking my dogs around our new neighborhood at night. part of what i like, i think, is just that there's a lot of open space that isn't lit, and the little golf-cart tracks take nicely roundabout ways of getting places. The darkness is sort of an anonymous darkness, not readily identifiable in my previous experiences of darkness, but not secretive, either. I'm sure after a few more weeks of night-time walks, it will become a darkness with more crystallized qualities. I think puck prefers more light, but larry seems excited at the opportunity to let his nose and ears take over the sensory load, snuffling with a little extra energy, maybe even with a touch of bravado. After a certain distance of walking, but before they get tired, the boys relax into a regular rhythm, allowing the sidewalk to determine their course, and last night i tried just closing my eyes and letting them lead me. Probably not a great idea, because it would have been a wonderful way to lose an arm, had a rabbit darted past, but i pretended for a moment that Larry was a responsible seeing-eye dog and he happily played along (which is to say, i don't think he knew i was doing anything different)
