I love both the Tegami Bachi manga & the anime versions so naturally I've been following the the latest Season & I've got to say I did not see the ending of ep.5 coming at all! Anyone who's read up to chapter 34 in the manga but hasn't been following the anime, I'd recommend just checking this ep out simply because it reveals things as yet unrevealed (but which potentially explain a great deal) about what is currently going on in the latest chapters of the manga!
So, from last week's preview it was obvious that this episode was going to differ from the manga, simply because it deals with the introduction of Garrard & Valentine before all the Blue Notes Blues & Cabernet storyline. Interestingly, to make this "out-of-order" plot shift the anime implies Garrard & Valentine have traveled to Yuusari on Lloyd's request as he already knows who the inspectors are before they meet face to face, (unlike the scene in the manga where he asks Aria who the capital have sent).
Plus, Valentine ironically voices the (as yet unmentioned in the manga?) possibility that members of the Bee Hive have been giving Reverse intel. Either way in order to fill out the space left by Thunderland Jr's confrontation with Garrard & Valentine the episode mainly deals with a mission that the two, Lag, Niche & Steak go on to the South so that they can investigate the rise in attacks on Letter Bees by Reverse agents.
I liked the way they used this set up to fill out Garrard's character some more, instead of having him try to take over immediately and seeming really bitter there was more a sense of disillusionment to his character - especially when he revealed he no longer has the unwavering resolve to be able to shoot a shindan any more.
Despite the hints, I was still shocked by the revelation that Garrard & Valentine were actually working for Laurence, infiltrating the capital and conducting experiments for Reverse. I have to wonder whether the anime is taking a different plot line to the manga or whether, considering the first Season was mostly loyal with extra side stories & a some things revealed earlier than the manga, Garrard & Valetine's alliance with Reverse will turn out to be official?
I always figured Garrard to be too proud to follow anyone else's orders, he's also among the elite who are likely to benefit from the capital's corruption considering he wields the authority of the Government so it'll be interesting to see how things turn out and what could motivate him to (apparently) side with Reverse.
Anyone got any thoughts on the subject?
