Radio for W.

W. is the friend for whom I'm writing this script I'm working on. My task for this week is to prepare a playlist that we can listen to together next weekend, so that I can point out the various devices that are used. I think I will gather my ideas here. So far I'm thinking Cabin Pressure (but which episodes?), Hitchhiker's Guide Live (will have to ( Read more... )

Hello! I remember you from about ... six years ago!

Yeah, the first episode (Abu Dhabi) is not my favourite (that would be Ottery St Mary, hence my profile pic), but it is great for showing somebody how to introduce characters and setting skillfully. There's no need to say, "This is a sitcom that takes place in a small charter airline. The two pilots are Martin and Douglas. Martin is indecisive and a bit of a fuck-up, and Douglas is smart as hell but not so good at following the rules." Because all that information is made completely integral to the humour and the plot (which are also integral to each other, because John Finnemore is fucking brilliant). It's also great for illustrating effective scenes transitions (something Cabin Pressure does better than any other radio I've heard, with only a few weak spots) and effective use of sound effects, which are the two things W. is especially interested in. The spareness and efficiency of Cabin Pressure is what I'm aiming for in my script, but W. is a musician, so he's planning to mood it way up once it's in production. Which, if anything, means I need to make my script even more spare and efficient.

*waves* Feels like ages since I've fallen out of love with House.
Sherlock and everything Benedict are my fandoms atm *rolls around in them*

What about that ep where they have to move the piano? That would be a good one to show different settings and that things don't need to just take place on the airplane to be good (and Yellow Car!)
Have you run across Finnemore's blog? He talked a bit about the eps back when they aired. Had some interesting behind the scene stuff.

Yeah, I fell out of love with House in S3, stopped watching in S4. Watched the last three episodes just to see what they would do with House/Wilson. Was satisfied.

The piano ep is Ottery St Mary. If you go back to Finnemore's blog when it aired, you'll see that it's one of his favourite eps too, he thinks probably because he had extra time to work on it (waiting for Benedict to recover from his illness). But even though it is in most ways unsurpassable, there are a few weak scene transitions... maybe specifically because it's not the usual flight deck/cabin/airport locations. (For instance, I have noticed that if a character leaves the room, I expect the next scene to have followed them. If it stays with the people who were left behind, I get momentarily confused.)

I absolutely LOVE the fact that Finnemore posts photos of his notebooks and talks about his process. He's my hero ( I got to meet him in London recently). Did he do that for S2 and 2 also? I haven't gone back that far.

I'd have to say Steven Moffat and John Finnemore are my fandoms right now (and England in general), with heavy lashings of Sherlock Holmes/John Watson/Benedict Cumberbatch/Martin Freeman. I ship Johnlock devotedly in spite of myself. (Shippers gonna ship, I guess.) I'd say daasgirl's video Aftermath pretty much captures how I feel about that relationship: It's gonna take years to ever get functional.

Yeah, House wrapped up pretty nicely. Hated the last few seasons, but glad it went out on a good note--at least to me.

For me, it is just the opposite. I don't expect to be following the characters through the doors. Maybe because in most sitcoms, the characters exit off stage and we don't follow them?

There is a LJ syndicated feed for Finnemore, if you haven't seen it:
here.

I am having the hardest time shipping Sherlock. Everything I start turns to gen. Gah! (and I totally agree about Sherlock's declarations of love towards John was just to get what he wanted).

Yeah, Aftermath is a great vid :) (and also her Cat's in the Cradle vid is totally canon to me lol)
