Teflon Don: The Continuing Chronicles

Oh, God, he's going to write about himself again.

After graduating from Bradley with a degree in English, and after accepting a short-lived freelance job with a small newspaper, I decided to scrap the writing thing and follow my childhood dream: SCIENCE. Biology, in particular. For the past few months, I've been working to find out exactly the best way to break into that business despite having a completely unrelated degree.

After consulting a bunch of knowledgeable people, I decided to try graduate school. The school I set my heart on, University of Chicago, said they probably wouldn't let me in without any experience. In retrospect, that's a good thing.

I took a course in introductory biochemistry there, which just ended Friday. It completely kicked my ass. It's unlikely I received a passing grade. Chemistry was probably the aspect of science at which I was worst. Unfortunately, it's necessary to study biology, the subject at which I was best. Funny how these things work out.

So my next step is to get a second bachelor's in biology, or the equivalent thereof, from a reputable institution. I might go back to Bradley. I might try UC. I might try post-bac work at Loyola. I have to look into the cost of each option, as well as what funding I can get from the government and stuff.

On the other hand, I may soon have a part-time job as a laboratory assistant. Gift of Hope is a group that takes organs out of dead people and sticks them into nearly-dead people to make them less nearly-dead. And they have seen fit to grant me an interview. There will be no organ-slicing for me, alas, but it sounds like an interesting job anyway.
