Northwest lowers bag rate

Nov 12, 2008 09:12

Northwest is lowering a number of its fees, including the second-checked-bag fee (from $50 to $25).

ETA: From nwa.com: "Beginning December 5th, customers flying within the United States will be charged $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second checked bag, aligning these fees to Northwest's existing policies."

That's because all of a sudden, nobody's flying because they can't afford it!

It's like the gas companies...

GC: Hey, look! We can raise the price of gas to $4 a gallon, and people will still buy it!

American Public: Um, no, actually, we won't...

GC: How about $3.50?

AP: Nope.

GC: $3?

AP: Nuh-uh...

GC: $2??!!

AP: We'll think about it...

Odd,

That's all they charged me this weekend for the second bag. It would have been a $50 charge on top of the $15 one if the bag had been over 50 lbs., so I redistributed things to bring it down to 45lbs. and 20lbs. and paid $40 instead of $65 each way.

Maybe they thought you looked grumpy and would stab them with the swords if they didn't give you a good deal.... :P

And people say grumpiness doesn't pay.

"Smile, and the world smiles with you,
Growl, and they give you 50% off"

umm... that's not right. It was never $50 for the second bag (I've flown NW a lot in the last year) If you go to NWA's page, you can see the baggage charges based on when you purchased your ticket

An email from Northwest is where I saw the initial note about the price decrease. Perhaps this part of their "alignment of fees and services" with Delta means that Delta previouly had a $50 charge for the seond bag and they're bringing the Delta prices down to match Northwest's? Also, if you're any sort of elite member, you get two free checked bags (first class gets 3).

The merger FAQ's section is where my quote was from: http://www.nwa.com/merger/faq/#baggage (see #34). Honestly, I'm guessing there's been a lot of confusion and slowly-disseminating info that no one has been able to keep track of lately.

it was hard to find but Delta's policy was the first checked bag was free but the second was $50 so it looks as though Delta will be changing their price to match NW
