So, as you may have seen in the movies, Texas takes high school football very seriously. The term "Friday Night Lights" is not just a movie name. It existed long before the movie. Friday night lights bring a community together and make heroes out of farm boys.
They also show us all that is wrong with our culture.
Westlake High School here in Austin is a public high school in a very wealthy part of town. It is a football powerhouse with a rich alumni base that does all they can to make Westlake a winner.
Their high school stadium has a jumbotron with film crew, astroturf, and a luxury press box.
This past week, the governing high school competition body, the UIL, did the right thing in strething its guidelines to allow students displaced by Katrina to start school and participate in school activities without interruption. That was a good move that helps give sanity to kids faced with an insane situation.
And then one of my buddies tells me that standing on the sidelines at Westlake's game this past weekend was Louisiana's top high school runningback. He just enrolled as a Westlake student and will begin playing football for them.
I wonder how many other displaced Louisiana students Westlake has gone out of their way to enroll? I'm sure the fact that this kid is a top football player had nothing to do with Westlake "recruiting" him. I'm sure Westlake has brought in hundreds of other poor, homeless, displaced hurricane victims into their pristine hallways full of white faces and designer jeans.
Right.
