I haven't had a good rant in quite a while, so here's hoping I'm not too out of practice. This one's on incest, which I've been intending to write for a while but haven't had time to sit down and type.
Just warning you now that my keyboard could freeze at any second, so don't be too surprised if the entry is cut off halfway through or something.
I'm not saying nobody should write about incest, and I'm not saying fanauthors should read ten textbooks on the subject before they put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as the case may be). All I'm saying is that people should put a bit of thought into what they're writing about, and not treat incestuous relationships as if they were nothing unusual.THANK you. I wonder how many incest authors of the Schubaltzcest nature have ever looked at their brothers and thought "Wow, he's actually kind of hot..." *shudders* And hey, how many of them have used the old "I see them more as having a brother-sister relationship" to explain away that inconvenient het pairing, hmm? Obviously I'm generalising in my absolute bliss of absolute ignorance, but I've read some Schubaltzcest, and I can't believe that it's a generalisation that doesn't hit the mark for at least some of those authors

Exactly! I mean, I can appreciate that some of my cousins are goodlooking, but that doesn't mean I want to jump them! o_O
I agree, it's not necessary to read ten textbooks - frankly, I'd settle for one, or even a chapter, or hey, how about an article on incest as dug up on this here interweb thing?
Completely agree. When you have access to an entire internetful of information (not all of it accurate, admittedly, but there are plenty of reputable sources) there is absolutely no excuse for "oh, but I couldn't find any information on it..." Just say no to unresearched writing.
Incidentally, when I say homosexuality, I'm speaking from the viewpoint of having read far too many fics consisting of "Wow, Kai's hot. Hey, I must be gay!" followed by a couple of admissions "I'm gay." "Well, that's okay by me!" and the seduction of the targetted seme in question.I've written that (cf: BoW

*grins* Thanks for the resounding endorsement! I know I can be incredibly opinionated sometimes, and it's good to know that I'm not coming across as a completely loudmouthed idiot. ^^;
In the Harry Potter fandom, for example, Weasleycest (especially twincest) has quite a solid fanbase.
It's frickin HUGE. If you aren't into twincest then you stick the boys with Angelina and someone else, but even then those type of fics are disappearing like het is going out of style. (Which it is, in my firm belief) I think that the Harry Potter fandom is lucky in a sort of way, as there is a number of mature fans who do take the effort to research those kind of subjects. Granted, it's still treated as a taboo when brought up in any other pairing piece of fanfiction. But the major idea is that it exists. Errr... no clue where I'm going here. Moving along:
In a similar vein, incest is often written purely because it looks pretty, or as a rebellion against fandom norms, and the realities of the issue are completely ignored. The reason: Fangirls, nine times out of ten, always route for the aesthetically pleasing match - regardless of their relationship with one another or their lack of relationship with one another. It's wrong, but

Really? Wow! I'm not into HP fandom much (just a dabbler), so while I've come across Weasleycest (especially, as you say, twincest), I didn't realise it was that big. It's weird, isn't it, the way these things take off in certain fandoms?

*nods* Definitely. It can only be hoped that those fen might encourage others to adopt their attitude. Not realistically hoped, perhaps, but hoped nevertheless! ^__^

Thing is though, I have no problem with that. Pair up whoever the hell you like - pair up two characters who have never even met, if you want to - but for goodness' sake, do it believably. Have some sort of

Okay, maybe I'm bending the image a bit since I don't look at the het fandom at all, but us slashers do like or tolerate twincest a lot. *nods firmly* I'm sure of it. And yes, it is amusing how some fandoms just don't get it as others. For example: Zeo/Takao-cest. Are they indeed brothers, or what?
*nods* Definitely. It can only be hoped that those fen might encourage others to adopt their attitude. Not realistically hoped, perhaps, but hoped nevertheless! ^__^Personally, I find the Harry Potter fandom to be mature in general. While the fanfiction.net category is no example, there are hundreds of archives out there that really are meant for the mature reading, having visited a good portion of them. Thus, most fans if they are dedicated enough will take the effort. Or, at least those on select LJ

<--- Not that I've been sucked into Elriccest doujin or anything... o_onerdcoreJuly 28 2004, 16:59:49 UTC
I wanted to pop in and say I really enjoyed reading this, 'cuz I would have felt terrible if I would have forgotten. If I wasn't so sleepy at the moment, I'd elaborate on it, but let's just say I pretty much agree 100% on your reasonings.
...Ahhh, what the hell.
In specfic: While I think twincest in fandom has every right to be fun, I do agree with you on the note that if someone chooses to write about it in a dark and serious nature that it should be well researched and thought out. Not just an excuse for melodramatic angst and pretty boy snogging. (That's what humor fic and doujinshi are for, afterall. o__O) And that yes, it shouldn't be looked over by other characters as if it were normal, because it most certainly is not. Unfortunately, there are so many authors who are hung up on doing something so "wildly rebellious" that two brothers gettin' their swerve on is the their way of getting their foot in the door and joining the coalition of omgz lolz i am so k00l 'cuz they r teh smex and i am sooo awesome fangirls. It amuses me

And I wanted to say that I read your disclaimers and wasn't implying against any of them just now. Upon re-reading my post I could see where someone might think that, so yeah. Just saving us from any stress that could be caused by a minor misunderstanding. Yay for being cautious and whatnot. ^_^;

OMG u dun agree completely with evrything i sed, u MEANIE!!!1! i'm SOOOO taking u off my frendzlist and i'm gonna diss u 2 all my frendz, cuz ur just jelous of me, u h8r!!!
...Or in other words, don't stress about disagreeing with anything I say or bringing a different opinion to the table. If I didn't want people to reply to this I could have locked the comments, after all, and I'm absolutely delighted to hear what you have to say on the matter. Besides, if everyone just agreed with each other completely all the time, there'd never be any interesting discussions! ^__~
...when done correctly. I'm stressing this too much. =_____=;; And don't call Itachi a nutjob! *hugs protectively* A-M-B-I-T-I-O-U-S, DANGEROUS HOT MAN.
