I sometimes wonder what would have happened in SV canon if Lex hadn't been in his office when Lionel so dramatically & stupidly showed up -- via helicopter, during a tornado, dammit!-- to ream him out about Lexcorp. We wouldn't have gotten our sexy-cool "let loose the dogs 'o war" lines or the imagery of the little bit of blood by Lex's eye, but it would have been worth it to have Lionel swoop in, throwing open both doors to the office, shouting "LEX!", and... nobody's there.* It's an anticlimactic moment of *huh* for Lionel. And then the ceiling falls in on him, squishing him to Luthor-paste, as Lex isn't there to pull the beam off him.
I suspect that is how Joss would have written it.
It occurs to me that if Clark were holed up in the storm cellar with Lex, then Lana would have bought the proverbial farm, too. You'd think the girl hadn't been raised in tornado country. Or ever watched The Wizard of Oz.
* No fool, Lex is off in the Kent storm cellar with Clark, waiting out the storm, probably pondering how to go about asking Clark what that huge, silvery thing under the tarp is that he's making believe doesn't exist. "Uh, Clark? Why is your post-modern coffeetable... humming?"
