I'm spending the last hour of my twenties watching early Star Trek: The Original Series. I have vague memories of seeing a few episodes on TV at the YMCA when I was a child, but otherwise I'd reached adulthood without much knowledge of this show other than pop culture and spinoff novels.
--William Shatner was once young and pretty. William Shatner, people! The old slob in the bad hairpiece was once a handsome young man. Good heavens.
--Uhura is very cute and fun. Of course she's also Fanservice Girl, but I have a feeling we are all fanservice girls here, back in early cretaceous sexism. (Oh jesus, are those her underpants? And it's going to get worse from here.) But on the other hand she's allowed to have a sense of humor.
--Leonard Nimoy, Walter Koenig: much better actors than I'd realized.
--She's a salt vampire. A salt vampire, people! GUYS! SHE'S A SALT VAMPIRE! They're not listening to me.
--George Takei is cute and a good actor, but I knew that already. Sulu has plant muppets in his office.
--Aaaand she's also a shapeshifter and this is unexpectedly creepy and good.
--Even when the effects look half-baked, you can tell what they were trying to do. Like the paper plate starship sweeping majestically past the gas giant.
--I'm a sucker for shapeshifter/bodysnatcher plots where the same character is played by a series of different actors. This was a good strong shapeshifter story.
--Aww, she's a salt AND LOVE vampire! And her monster form looks like a sad gibbon.
--Spock is actually pretty hot. All of a sudden, I understand an entire fandom.
--"I was just thinking about the buffalo." Awwww.
--Everybody recovers remarkably fast from life-shattering trauma, and I have the feeling I ain't seen nothing yet.
