Hipster werewolves

Actually "Illustration for Legendes Rustiques", by George Sand:

I've always liked the way they're leaning against the wall like the hoodie-wearing students who hang around on the sidewalks in my town, looking burnt-out.  In my mind's eye the nearest group of three is passing a joint around.  The one who's all by herself wants to go hang out with the further crowd, but she's way too proud and haughty to act as though she actually needs people, so she's standing there with her muzzle stuck up in the air.

My mother surprised me today by liking this picture after she saw it in a magazine.  We had a great discussion about how things that are nearly human but not quite can be more creepy than things that don't look human at all.  See: Valley, Uncanny.  It forced me to remember that I was terrified of these wolves as a small child.  Even now, I find them worrying.  The artist did a good job of giving them strong wolf features and strongly human characteristics.
