Draculas I Have Loved

Oct 11, 2010 21:16

A love letter, of sorts--and I'm not even all that into vampires (the lady doth protest too much).  Under the cut lies a series of photos and film stills depicting filmic Draculas through the decades.  If you feel I've missed some good ones, please add them in the comments.

Primal Rodent Dracula
(Nosferatu, 1922)
(Sticking-out ears have never been so disturbing)

Metrosexual European Dracula
(Dracula, 1931)
(Lugosi was way more overtly sexual than people imagine he was)

Poor Innocent Chump Dracula
(Son of Dracula, 1943)
(A much better flick than you'd think.  I'll post more on this later.  It's the one on the left you should really fear)

Riverboat Gambler Dracula
(House of Frankenstein, 1944, and House of Dracula, 1945; I believe this still is from the latter)
(The skinniest vampire with the worst timing yet seen in a Universal picture)

Byronic Bastard Dracula
(Horror of Dracula, 1958, and many films thereafter--I'm not sure which one provided the image but it's pretty typical, really)
(Lee has an expression of smug self-importance in repose that puts me off, but I do like the way he snarls and drools.)

Psychotic Mama's Boy Not-Really-Dracula-But-I'm-Throwing-Him-In-Anyway
(Brides of Dracula, 1960)
(For my money, the scariest Hammer vampire)

Disco Dracula
(Dracula, 1979)
(The original sensitive vampire lover)

Retro Beatnik Dracula
(Dracula, 1992)
(Never saw this, can't vouch for him or the film either way, but I do like his look)

High Camp Pimpin' Dracula
(Van Helsing, 2004)
(Like the film, he's fast, he's pretty-looking, and he doesn't take himself too seriously.  An old friend)

And that's it for the moment, though I understand we're going to have Sam Worthington as Dracula foisted upon us sometime soon.  (Dracula: Year Zero, not a promising title.)  This is pretty much where my mind went on hearing that:

What the hell, it might be a good film.  (I bought him as a ten-foot-tall blue catperson, so...)  The more the merrier, I say.  Who did I miss?

vampires, dracula, picspam, film yak, halloween, movies
