I think if you didn't already know the details of the premise it was kind of difficult to understand what was going on at first. It was unneccessarily confusing. It was like throwing your audience right in the middle of Lost or BSG without any of the exposition.
I do think the show is going to be a grower. The lack of humour was so strange at first but I actually like that Joss seems to be taking his time crafting something more serious. It has a lot of potential and I really hope it lives to fulfil it.
For the first half I was really worried because without a 'real' main character, the show didn't feel very cohesive. I mean that's a huge risk to take with a TV show on FOX. But I thought things picked up - and my doubts about Eliza's versatility have abated a bit - and I can see where Joss might be going. Echo had a subtle personality all the way through and no doubt it will become more pronounced as time goes on. I think I have more trust in the concept because it's Joss, and I can see it just needs time to build. I like that the Dollhouse is being depicted as completely evil, and I thought Echo's handler was the most interesting character so far.
It wasn't a great pilot - and neither was Welcome to the Hellmouth or City Of - but there was enough there to grab my interest, and it was so nice to recognise every single producer and writer on the credits.
And can I just say - damn Battlestar Galactica is one satisfying show. You stick it out, and not only do they give you answers, they give you cohesive answers. We've still got a bit to learn, but I just really appreciate how satisfying that is.
