In which I am a blubbering, angry, pissed off mess and conclude that TV in '07 CAN OFFICIALLY GO TO HELL.
WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT BULLSHIT?
WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY DO TO MARIAN'S CHARACTER?
WHAT THE FUCK DID THEY DO TO GUY'S CHARACTER?
I'm sorry, I thought I was going to have an articulate opinion on this, that it was going to make sense and I might be able to appreciate the Greek tragedy-like angst of it all, but that was BULLSHIT. They ruined Marian's character. My favourite of all characters! At the start, I was already a bit wary because though we know she can be reckless as the Nightwatchman, she is not the kind of reckless that would singlehandedly kill the Sheriff and rationalise all of the consquences. That was rushed and clumsy and not Marian. Tell me if I'm wrong, but I never really got the impression Marian gave a shit about the King and Robin's greater crusade to help him. I always thought Marian's concern was with the poor of Nottingham - isn't that why she campaigned so strongly as the Nightwatchman? - sometimes even despite Robin's wishes, and always criticised Robin for worrying himself with the bigger things. The way she suddenly inserted herself in the whole conspiracy was contrived and WEIRD.
And Guy. It's like they just completely overlooked every single moment of character development over the last season, particularly 2x11 when he willingly saved Marian and lied for her and demonstrated that he does have a good side and he does want her to care for him. Suddenly he was willing to turn his back on her, work with the Sheriff again, and HE WANTED TO TAKE HER BY FORCE. I get that he might have (finally) realised something was still going on between Marian and Robin, but even in the first season he wanted her to LOVE HIM. He didn't want to force her into anything, he wanted her to develop her own feelings!
AND THEN HE FUCKING STABBED HER. WITH A SWORD. I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE, NAY TWO, PAIRINGS END QUITE LIKE THAT. And the way Marian acted in that scene - HE HAD A SWORD IN HIS HAND, YOU IDIOT. WAS TAUNTING HIM AT THAT MOMENT REALLY SUCH A GOOD IDEA? The fact that she laughed at him and mocked him and suddenly threw it in his face that she was in love with Robin? WHAT WAS THAT? Marian proved, just last episode in fact, that she has some genuine affection for Guy. This wasn't even her way of finally dropping the pretences, it was just needlessly cruel and out of character. And Guy stabbing her, though I can certainly understand the rationale behind it - that this woman who has been messing with his head for so long now, messing with his affections and his hopes to redeem himself, finally went too far - WAS THAT JUST A BIT OF AN OVERREACTION, GUY? WAS IT?!
I just... no. The writing where those two characters were concerned was horrible and wrong and it basically ruined my interest in that pairing. Thanks a lot.
Maybe I should just stop shipping altogether. It all just inevitably ends in death and destruction and decapitation and weird suddenly being phased out for the new and improved model anyway. *sulks*
Well, happy things. Um, yay Allan?
Will and Djaq finally getting together was GORGEOUS AND I LOVED IT but them staying behind? WHERE DID THAT COME FROM AND WHY WAS IT NECESSARY?
And Robin and Marian. For once, it was only her scenes with him that redeemed her for me, it was like she finally realised she's been holding back and gave him her affections wholeheartedly. I cried when they were getting married in the desert and Much started to cry, and I sobbed like a baby when they finished their vows as she lay dying.
"I love you, my husband."
"I love you, my wife."
*SOBS UNCONTROLLABLY*
But it was still abrupt and ridiciulous and then at the end, ' well we have to keep fighting blah blah blah.' WHATEVER, YOU STUPID DECEIFTUL SHOW.
The thing that irritates me is that the episode was really quite compelling, until it reached a certain point and just went off the deep end. The scene when the Sheriff realised Guy and Allan knew what Marian was capable of? Awesome. The scene in the carriage? Awesome. The whole segment in the barn? AWESOME. No wonder so many people are convinced it was a dream. My God.
In the end, I just can't get past the fact that they actually killed off the heroine. I hope we hear that Lucy wanted to leave and they had to write it in BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY WAY THIS MAKES SENSE. It's true that Marian was losing her place in the world of the show, certainly because of the events of this episode - she could never return to the castle, she could never really go back to the forest (I just couldn't see that working), and yes, they had reached a sort of climatic point in the love triangle, but they could have written around that. They can always think of something. I refuse to believe a lack of creativity is the reason they killed her off.
AND THERE WILL BE NO PICTURES. NONE. I DON'T CARE HOW PRETTY THEY ALL ARE.
