I find myself using food when I'm only moderately injured and out in the wild, since I like to conserve my stimpacks. Of course I've also amassed a huge amount of Rad-X so I'm not yet worried about becoming too irradiated. And there are foods out there that do give you more health than most of the standard early ones.
I'm also annoyed by the limited amount that I can carry...I keep finding things that seem like it would be cool once I get some schematics or something, but then just leave it behind. At least I can use my repair skill to combine a bunch of heavy weapons/armor into single yet more effective items.
In regards to the fast travel, that doesn't bother me since the original Fallout games made heavy use of the exact same thing. I haven't yet had a need to use it in Fallout 3 but probably will soon.
