Poor Curtis & Mallory: Tbl

K, I’ll admit it. I am a devotee of The Biggest Loser. There, I said it.

Reality TV is generally not my thing. Nothing has ever compared to the finale of the first season of Survivor. They couldn’t have scripted television that compelling. Since then, however, I’ve just not been motivated to watch these types of programs (except maybe American Idol). I don’t watch Big Brother, The Real World, The Great Race or the one where you ate squid eyeballs. Nope.

But I do love me some Biggest Loser.

The appeal of the show is that fat people who never thought they could lose weight, do with the help of diet and exercise only. There is no surgery, no drugs, just honest to goodness hard work with trainers. And the transformations are astonishing.

And I love the trainers! Bob is great, but Jillian, man, I would pay large dollars to have her yell at me! Her style is SO what I need. (Jillian, can you hook a sista up?) I never liked that Barbie-doll Kim and I’m glad they got rid of her for this latest season. Jillian yells and makes you find that extra strength in yourself that can get out that last rep. Jillian is da bomb!

The season that just started is couples competing together. There are best friends, a mother and son, mother and daughter, husbands and wives, an ex-husband and wife, former teammates and brothers. My favorite couple, Curtis and Mallory, were a fabulous, devoted black couple who were committed to losing weight for their health and for their daughters.

Curtis and Mallory were the type of black couple you don’t see all that often on TV. They were married with 3 daughters. They spoke standard English. Curtis clearly loved and was devoted to his wife (and had none of the typical playa-playa attitude seen with brothas on TV). Mallory was a togetherblackwoman. The coaxed each other on and went the extra mile. It was a beautiful thing. Until they were voted off last week. That freaking sucked!

Curtis & Mallory (the brown team, natch!) and the ex-husband/wife couple were up for elimination last week. The interesting thing is that the ex-husband/wife couple went out to all the others and lobbied to not be voted off. They talked about how the husband would die if he didn’t lose weight and how much they needed TBL. Curtis and Mallory refused to do this. And though it ended up biting them in the ass, I understood their reasoning. I probably wouldn’t have done it either. It would feel too much like begging (even though I know logically that it isn’t the same) and I couldn’t have brought myself to beg. So C & M got voted off allegedly because people knew they could do the weight loss on their own. And I cried. I couldn’t believe it, but I did.

So now I’ve got to find people to root for. It won’t be the newlywed couple with the whiny husband. I also don’t like that Chicago mother and her son who are busy talking about people. Maybe BetteSue and her daughter. She is a trip.

Anyone else watching?
