22. So dig a little deeper, cause
You still don't get it yet
See me lickin' my lips, need a primitive fix
And I'll make, I'll make you love me
'Extraordinary' - Liz Phair
People, Gretel has decided, don’t get her, of course she’s never been the most popular girl ever (even in her fairly limited teenage years) but ever since she found herself back as a human it’s just been worse, she gets a puzzled stare every single day.
It isn’t her clothes, they’re actually fairly modern (shock, horror) and picked out by Marie, it might be her hair but god dammit redheads aren’t a rarity… Maybe her accent since the looks get even more puzzled when she opens her mouth, but this is a modern global society and so most accents should be commonplace.
…Perhaps it’s just her, the way she moves (differently than most humans she must admit, with more power), the way she speaks as if she’s much older than she looks and most of all her faint indifference to violence, it could be all of those since humans are so easily frightened.
Perhaps it’s because she still feels separate from them, still feels distanced even after being back as a rough human for several months, she just can’t relate to them.
She will though, one day she’ll make them love her, make them realize just how good she is and open up their minds, one day they’ll all see how wonderful she is and she’ll bask in it, fit in like she’s never quite managed before.
One day.
