Being an engineer makes it sound like you should be awesome and have a lot of knowledge. But being an automotive engineer seems to be debilitating.
Alex told me yesterday that he didn't feel qualified for a job outside of the automotive industry. That all his work experience left him with no real skills to market. Thinking about my job and what I do all day has made me think maybe he's right. What if I find myself looking for a new job, how would I market myself. My whole engineering career has been automotive focused; and even though I have developed good project management skills how will that promote me to a new company. How can I fantasize about being part of a design team for Apple or a bioelectronics firm when it really comes down to that I do no real design. The automotive industry is such a stifling unchanging industry that balks at new technology. Where does that leave us the designers?
