unaloveshugh and
mabe85 reply to my comment on last nights episode. It was a bit rushed so I appologize for any errors. I haven’t written a FF in so long.
Happy Readings!
You lean your head backwards as you sit in your bed and let out a long breath. The book you are reading lies open on your lap. You’ve been on the same page for the past hour because your mind has been elsewhere. After you found yourself repeating the same line for the fourth time, you realised that the book was - once again not the right distraction for you tonight.
However this was normal. You were not the type of girl to keep a journal. Much of your reflection was done at night when you made yourself comfortable before sleep.
While you told yourself, this was a time to relax and forget everything so that you can bathe in the few moments of peace before you close your eyes and wake to a new day of treating patients and once again having to care for everyone but yourself- you knew better. There are some things you can’t forget. Some things like him.
You had not seen Chase for about two to three weeks now. Despite his paranoia about you sleeping with a certain someone else, the two of you seemed to have established a line of tension that indicated you both needed some time out.
Still you don’t know why he thought so much of it as you thought the two of you agreed your relationship was ‘just sex’. You honestly did not know who was using whom.
Plus you are kind of enjoying this extra time you had to yourself and you were finding that being alone was a nice change compared to going to sleep all hot and sweaty with Chase.
But of course Chase, was not the particular person on your mind right now.
x------
Your ridiculous liking of him had developed into something so much more within the past 3 years. House. You swore to yourself the day you resigned from your over matured fellowship that you would not break down, believing that you leaving was the best choice you could have made for yourself.
After the second month away from Princeton, away from your old job, away from him- you realised that you leaving would have been a good choice. If you could stick with it.
Instead you found yourself calling Cuddy, asking if there were any vacant positions available, hoping you could come back and at least steal a glimpse of him. Something was better than nothing.
Chase had returned to Princeton. He would come back some nights filling you in with the latest gossip and all the complaints and rumours the nurses had made on that one grumpy doctor which seemed to like making everyone’s life a living hell. And you could only wish you had been there yourself.
By the third month you were once again a part or Princeton Plainsboro.
You can remember yourself on your first day back. You had dyed your hair blonde a few days before. It was symbolic to you. It represented your change. You were returning stronger and more head strong than you had ever been before. You wanted to show him that you had grown from the little minion you once were.
Another part of you wanted to knock him off his feet and make him fall madly in love with you. You wanted to see the shock on his face when he sees your change. You want to see the regret in his eyes for letting you go so many times. You wanted to see the passion, hope and love you had always seen behind the sarcastic remarks and the rude comments, which was always safely hidden and locked away from everyone. Everyone you felt but you.
Three weeks was the amount of time you managed to buy yourself, hoping that he would ‘bump into you’ or you could figure the surprising appearance you could make for him. Still you should have known better. He always had a way of knowing everything. Plus Wilson would have told him.
But not everything was lost when he made the comment about you looking like a hooker or about your new position. You still saw a curiousness that wondered what had caused you to return. You weren’t going to tell him though. This time he would have to find out for himself.
x------
Several months from then and still nothing.
It had all resulted to this. You sitting in bed and wondering when something will happen.
There was something though. For the majority of this week you had been in his office, helping him sort out paperwork. Paperwork, which had somehow managed to be collected in the janitor’s closet for god knows how long.
You still couldn’t understand why you always ended up clearing his mess. So much for the new stronger you.
You could tell by the piles of unopened mail and the files scattered around everywhere, what state his office had become without you there. It was of course managed with the most minimum effort with whatever organisational tool or skill a male could have.
Somewhere between putting the boxes of completed files on his desk and him telling the electricians to tilt the new plasma screen to a new angle, you found yourself being caught in a small conversation about why you always ended up being the sucker that gave into doing the dirty work.
He sits lazily in his chair, resting his feet comfortably on the footrest in front of him as he admires the busyness of everyone around him. Then his eye’s turn to you, half expecting a naïve or heartfelt reply with the question he was about to ask.
‘You miss me’
It was more a statement.
You think quickly.
‘You miss me! You hired Thirteen to…’
As you speak you are hitting yourself. What are you saying Allison?
Still, you were to determine to finish what you started. You were going to stand your ground and be strong. He had played hard to get for so long and this was only the least you could do.
After listing a range of aspects that you miss about your old job you can see in his expression the hint of control that he feels he is gaining over you. It wasn’t going to happen. You pause as you listen to him almost begging you to come back and offering to fire his fellows so that you can work for him again. As if expecting you to praise him in someway and immediately give in.
Though you couldn’t really call it begging- House didn’t beg - much.
You were beginning to feel smug about choosing to stay strong. You enjoyed this extra effort he made into luring you back and you took it all in with a calm face, refusing to show any signs of weakness. You could have, if you wanted to say ‘yes’ and the job you’ve been missing for so long- with the puzzles and the private investigators and him, could be yours again.. However you weren’t going to and you despised yourself for that but it was the last thing you said that made you want to kill yourself.
‘I don’t miss you’
It wasn’t true. The words came out too soon but you must have pulled it off well because you could see the dumbfounded shock expression on his face as he was hit with the unexpected. You knew it hurt him. And it hurt you too.
What chance did you have now?
The deed was done. If you poured yourself over him, he would know you hadn’t changed one bit. It’s just so typical for you to come crawling back in one way or another. Though you try your best to hide it. But you were scared that perhaps you had pulled off the line too seriously and now he really believes you don’t miss him.
x------
This was ridiculous.
It was getting extremely late and you had to wake up early tomorrow.
Get your act together Allison. You tell yourself.
Half way through the night you find yourself lying awake. Staring into the blackness of your room.
You had made up your mind. You weren’t going to chase after him. You were always the one that made the first moves. And for the smallest control you ever did gain over the two of you, he always managed to win it back.
This time you are going to let him do the chasing.
x------
By the next week, you had barely seen him.
The ER had been so busy that you didn’t have much time to walk out of there.
However today was less busy. And there were not so many nurses trying to block your face with new files, so you decided to take a walk. To the Diagnostics Department.
Allison, this is stupid. What are you trying to pull off? If he sees you, what are you going to say? Your work in the ER. Why would you need to go up there?
You knew it was stupid but you couldn’t help it, assuring yourself that you would walk past unseen. It's not like you haven't done it before. You were just curious to see what the team was up to. You loved to see them around that same table, coffee mugs in hand and suggesting diseases and treatments to him. And he would in return mock you till there was no tomorrow but that was also something you loved.
It reminded you of how it use to be.
------
Before you knew it, the elevator door had opened to the floor and you had spent all this time thinking to yourself without knowing it. This was not a healthy habit.
You walk forward and take a right, beginning your journey down that familiar hallway with the big room that had glass windows.
At that moment, the team was just leaving the room.
You keep your head up and stride forward, smiling and greeting them as if you were in a hurry to go somewhere. Of course you weren’t, and your quicker pacing had just killed off some of your time. Which is not what you wanted.
As you walk past, you casually turn your head towards the room, only to find that no one is in there. But through the corner of your eye you see him, sitting at his table, feet on the desk and staring blankly in thought while twirling his cane around his fingers.
Then you see him jump a little as he sees you walk by -he's caught you.
As he gets up and heads towards you, you don’t know whether to walk faster or slower.
For a cripple he could limp at amazing speeds. Plus if he didn’t stop you, his voice would. That is, he would probably shout out something embarrassing for the whole hallway to hear and you would eventually have to own up to something.
So you slow down.
‘What are you doing up here?’
Perfect. The one question you couldn’t answer.
‘I- I was just heading to the lab’
‘For what?’
He stares at you and you make the mistake of staring back. It was hard to lie once you looked into those blue eyes. Why was he always so nosey?
‘I needed to..’
‘Hungry?’
You were grateful he didn’t let you finish the sentence but at the same time you didn’t expect it.
‘What?’
‘Wilson has a lunch date with Cut Throat Bitch’
‘So that none of my business’
‘Yeah, I know. But I’m heading down to the cafeteria. You can pay. Since you miss me so much.’
You begin to feel a heat of anger inside you. You knew he was up to something.
‘I don’t miss you’
You said it again. But this time you wanted to. You really didn’t miss him. Not this part of him. You didn’t miss him knowing you were in a vulnerable moment and then throwing it in your face.
‘Then why are you here? In your scrubs, halfway through what most nurses call their lunch hour, walking past my office and with…. ‘
He looks at your hands.
‘Nothing for the lab’
He had caught you red handed and you didn’t know what to say.
Think quickly Allison. Don’t let him defeat you.
‘That’s because I’m picking up results’
‘Okay, well I’ll come with you. Then you can come with me to the cafeteria and buy me lunch’
WHAT? Now you’ve done it.
As you take your time walking to the lab, you try to hide the panic on your face, knowing you really had no reason to go there and wonder why you didn’t just admit that you missed him to avoid this mess.
He limps a few steps faster and opens the lab door for you. You can tell that he knows the truth and he is just playing along for the fun on it.
You hated how he always won these silly games.
You walk in, and your eye’s dart quickly from shelf to shelf looking for something that could take back to the ER without him questioning you.
‘What’s wrong?’
You jump as you realise his right behind you.
‘Nothing’
You walk over to the nearest shelf and fumble around with the files on it, pretending to look for something.
You knew he was enjoying your little stunt as he watched with a smirk on his face.
You could almost hear the next remark he was going to make. Already you could not imagine how much more embarrassing this situation could get.
‘Need help?’
‘No’
You stop look away from the files, keeping your back towards him.
You are once again towered by his presence as you feel his arm lightly brush again your shoulder as he reaches to pull down a file.
‘Adams, Michael. His blood results are clean. White count is good. Were you looking fo-’
You silently shout at yourself. This could go on forever and you couldn’t bare letting him have all the fun.
And then you do it. You break.
You turn around to face him and with one quick movement, move your hands around his head, drawing his lips together with yours. It catches him just as unexpectedly as it catches you, as you could not give yourself a good enough reason on why you were doing it.
For a long moment you can feel your tongues entwined with each other. You know that he is kissing back.
You can feel one of his hands wrapped around your waist and the other supporting your head.
If you knew he would respond this way, you would have done it earlier.
He was first to break free, a moment too quickly.
You are both out of breath as the two of you look questioningly into each other’s eyes.
His defence kicked in. He never did open up for too long.
‘I thought you didn’t miss me’
You knew he was just asking for it.
He loved being right. And as much as he doesn’t admit it, he loves the praise that comes with it. He loves the feeling of being loved or needed- for something.
You smile to yourself as you bring you hands around his head again and draw him in for another kiss.
‘Everybody lies’
