pardon me while I scream

I know this is a universal problem, but why do so many people come to the conclusion that being elected to run part of a locality entitles them to go off in whatever direction they feel like going? I've been involved in the Patrick Henry Charter School Initiative as much as I could be, because I think it's what the city needs (doesn't hurt that it's within walking distance of our house, either). Was it too much to hope that dealing with the School Board would be different than trying to get a human being on the phone to talk about my property tax bill? Apparently not, as noted here and here. The latest development is what makes my head hurt. Hesitating to allow something that can show up their so-called system is understandable, if annoying. Subterfuge I don't need from my elected officials.
