Well, look. You take the lower base of the third stem, and peel it back cross-hatch style with your pruning knife--be careful not to nick the petiole, or it'll try and stab you with those fangs. After that, you wrap the outer skin around the hypocotyl--

He looks up to see the second years watching him with possibly the blankest expressions in the history of Herbology classes. With an annoyed exhale, he decides to simplify a bit.

Okay. You take this branch here, cut it with X's, peel it back to here, and wrap it around there. That make sense?

There is a murmur of relieved assertation. The second years, having now seen the light, start pruning their plants while Teddy flops down in a chair and idly waits for one of them to get bitten.
