Background:
http://marvel.com/universe/Hulklinghttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulkling However, both histories seem to lack additional information about the latest run of Young Avengers- that's part of the reason why I've decided to take him from before the major events of that plot line.
Changes from canon, if AU: None.
Personality: At his core, Teddy is a nice guy. Even by superhero standards, he’s a surprisingly decent person- loyal to his friends, understanding to his enemies, and unable to hold back if he thinks someone should know something important. Unlike his namesake, Teddy doesn’t have flashes of rage, nor does he ever have problems controlling himself. Quite the contrary, there have been times when he’s reined in others- notably, when Billy Kaplan wanted to kill someone who’d been torturing Teddy before his eyes, and Teddy kept him from doing so. Likewise, he showed restraint when Skrull fanatics tried to kill him- a choice that initially earned him no end of scorn from some team mates, but which later proved to be a valid choice. Yes, the primary facet of Teddy’s personality is his kind heart.
However, he is far from a push-over or weak. Rather, the kindness stems from the fact that Teddy has nothing to prove and has grown up understanding what it means to be so desperate as to not act like oneself. While growing up, he’d made use of his powers to try to blend in- looking more buff in the locker room, for example, and later on, even pretending to be other superheroes to gain the recognition and acceptance he craved. To an extent, that craving still exists- the startled joy on his face when he accidentally came out to Billy’s parents and was accepted betrays that... but it’s muted, now that he has both a team to call his own and a boyfriend that he’s enamored with and who cares for him in turn.
If anything, that understanding and strength can get him into trouble. Teddy’s got moral clarity and often refuses to be swayed from his positions, which sometimes leads to dramatic choices. For example, when he saw that the Kree and Skrull forces were planning to war over him, with untold loss of life... he tried to fly into the middle of it, to get both forces to stop- risking his life several times over during that encounter. He also went out of his way to save K’lrt, the Super-Skrull, after the latter had held one of his teammates hostage and incinerated Teddy’s guardian- who at the time he thought was his mother. There was every possibility that K’lrt would turn on him, but Teddy couldn’t leave the man to die. A choice that, in the end, proved to be for the best. Unlike some other times, when he chased after team mates and got incinerated for his troubles. Perhaps Teddy takes on such roles because he knows that, of all his friends, he’s the one who can best handle such dangers. Or perhaps he just puts the needs of others before his own.
Really, the only thing that can get him truly enraged is a threat against one of his friends. He’s made threats- in all seriousness- to rip off legs if someone manipulated Billy, and he’s pulled no punches if that was what it took to get fighting to stop or to protect someone. It’s a rare sight, and one Teddy doesn’t like to acknowledge often, but it’s there, as it is for any normal person.
That’s the best way to sum up Teddy’s remaining personality. ‘Any normal person.’ Despite the super-powers, despite being a prince, despite being in very literal terms an alien, Teddy is a normal guy. He plays video games with his friends and gets worked up when he starts losing- ‘I HATE YOU I HATE YOU!’ He deals with school and the foibles of his friends, he’s an enormous geek and can cheerfully hold long discourses on the relative merits and vulnerabilities of every pokemon, and he keeps an eye to the future, because the Mutant Registration Act and the subsequent Civil War hurt deeply. That he chose to side with Captain America and the Anti-Reg side does speak to Teddy’s beliefs in freedom for the individual. It’s also worth mentioning that he and his team are one of the few that didn’t splinter in that chaos.
No discussion of his personality would be complete without mentioning Billy Kaplan. The two of them are close- very close. They sleep in the same bed without any reservations or blushing, they’d happily make out in Avengers Tower, Billy being erased from existence was the only thing that made Teddy turn against Iron Lad... Teddy’s aware of his boyfriend’s foibles and failings, but by and large, he doesn’t care. It’s quite possibly puppy love, perhaps even his first love, but Teddy’s head over heels for Billy, to the point of the aforementioned threat of maiming. Teddy is the strong knight to Billy’s secluded magician- they complement each other, they accept and work with each other’s powers, and all in all they’re just a very close, accepting unit. And nothing could make Teddy happier than that.
Abilities: -Shapeshifting (perfect, down to voice and retina; also provides unconscious protection to his organs and makes them hard to hit. This can extend even to animal forms or partial transformations.)
-Regeneration (not perfect, but he recovers very quickly from wounds of all sorts)
-Super-Strength
Writing sample: Sometimes, love wasn’t as easy as people made it out to be. Teddy was a nice guy, and he’d do a lot for any of his team mates, but especially considering that he had an idiot- a lovable, geeky, wonderful idiot- for a boyfriend, sometimes... sometimes he had to do things that he’d never do for anyone else. Like right now, where he was doing his best Billy Kaplan impersonation, and he’d done it well enough to fool both of his boyfriend’s parents.
No, the impersonation wasn’t so difficult. He knew Billy better than anyone- how he’d frown when he thought hard on something, the cute little awkward glances he gave when he thought he was being geeky or stood out, his grins... it was easy to pretend to be him. Physically, anyway.
The real challenge, the real reason it was so hard to do this, was because Billy’s life was so good, and said idiot wasn’t as happy with his life as he should be, and if Teddy acted too happy or strange then the two parents would think something was off. So when Mr. Kaplan chatted amiably, or Mrs. Kaplan fussed over him, Teddy had to pretend that it wasn’t anything special. He had to not let his wistfulness show- after all, Billy hadn’t watched his mother get incinerated before his eyes. Hadn’t met with his father one time, only to know that it was a final farewell. No, this wonderful life was nothing special to him, and Teddy had to act like it was something he could take for granted.
If he were anyone else, Teddy might have been upset about that. Billy had turned him down for his big soul-searching trip, opting instead to go with his brother. Chances were good he wouldn’t even share whatever he did learn- if it wasn’t important, he’d say that; if it was, he’d probably hide it until later. Might not even come back until late.
And yet Teddy did it anyway. Out of love, yes, but... also because he knew. He knew full well why Billy was doing it, why he was looking for even the faintest traces of his mother. And so... so he did what his boyfriend needed, no matter the cost. It wasn’t easy, it never was, but so long as Billy needed him, Teddy would be there.
