Character Name: Mirai Wakaba
Character Series: Puella Magi Kazumi☆Magica: The Innocent Malice, a spinoff of Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica.
Character Age: Not stated, but approximately 13-14.
Background: Mirai’s history. She’ll be coming from chapter 10, just before Kazumi begins to flashback.
Personality: Mirai Wakaba appears, on the surface, to be your average hotheaded girl. As she’s often shown to be frowning, Mirai first comes across as overly serious. Once she becomes comfortable, however, it’s obvious she has a bit of an ego, calling herself “Mirai-sama” occasionally and sometimes taking credit for things she didn’t do herself. She is very gung-ho and a bit overdramatic, tending to make poses when confronting an enemy and performing a rescue, as well as saying things like, “We’re the only ones who can save those two!”

With her forceful personality and the way she scolds others, you might think she’d be a natural choice for the leader of the group of seven Puella Magi she’s in called the Pleiades Saints, but in fact, Mirai is content to take a step back and support her teammates. This shows that her friendships are more important to her than playing the hero is, despite all her posturing.

While she does get violent, to the point of whacking her friend Kazumi on the head when Mirai get irritated at her, she does it because she cares for her fellow Pleiades. She knows acting so upset and worried will only hinder their efforts to help their other friends who are in trouble. Though she’s easily annoyed, she’s a very caring person, and cries nearly as much as Satomi, the most soft-hearted of the group, when having to kill a witch who was once someone they knew. In fact, one could say she’s too caring, though the side of her that expresses this rarely comes out except in dire circumstances.

Mirai was once a very introverted and shy girl before she met Kazumi and eventually made her contract with Jubey. She had no friends aside from her collection of teddy bears and was shunned by her classmates. This caused her to be incredibly lonely, and after becoming infected with a witch’s kiss (which causes people to try to commit suicide), Mirai nearly killed herself along with five other girls by jumping from a catwalk. All six girls were saved by Kazumi, and after nearly dying again when Kazumi forced them to fight for survival to shake them out of their hypnosis, they came together and became the Pleiades Saints. Mirai became very attached to these girls quickly (even throwing herself in the path of a monster to protect Saki, who she had not even spoken to before), as they had been her only friends in a long time (possibly in her entire life).

Mirai has a terribly violent and bloodthirsty streak towards those who hurt her friends. After spending quite a while without any friends save for her teddy bear collection, Mirai is fiercely protective of those she now has, particularly of the group’s de facto leader, Saki Asami. Normally, Mirai is content to just stay close to Saki, hanging onto one of her arms and saying, “Yay! ♥” when she’s chosen to be on Saki’s team when the group splits to cover more ground. However, when Saki got a small cut on her cheek trying to protect her, Mirai went berserk and destroyed the witch who hurt her in a single blow while screaming, “Die!” When these rages pass, she’s eerily calm and her first concern is her friends. If it’s pointed out to her, however, she does realize how her actions can disturb others, and she tries desperately to convince them she needed to do what she did.

Abilities: Mirai is a Puella Magi, also known as a magical girl. A Puella Magi is a girl who has made a contract and had a wish granted by an alien creature known as an Incubator in return for battling monsters known as witches. As such, her soul takes the form of a Soul Gem, which allows her to use magic.

Soul Gems slowly become corrupted when the owners of them use magic, and they require cleansing with Grief Seeds, or else Mirai will turn into a witch herself. Soul Gems also have the hazard of only working within 100 meters of the body. In short, if Mirai’s Gem is separated from her body by a distance further than 100 meters, her body will cease to function.

As her soul is separated from her body, Mirai is also incredibly difficult to kill: damage to her body will do very little, and killing her requires destroying her Soul Gem. A Puella Magi is practically invincible if her Soul Gem is cleansed regularly and kept safe.

Mirai can also be assumed to have the ability to communicate telepathically through her Soul Gem with other Puellae Magi and the Incubators and to track witches through it, as well, which is something that all Puella Magi can do.

Aside from those things, which are traits all Puella Magi share, Mirai has abilities specific to her. Her attacks come from a heart-shaped wand, which can transform into a giant sword as tall as she is. This wand can be used to fire magic, and she can use it as a part of the group spells, “Fili Del Toano” (an attack spell) and “Episodio Incrocio” (a binding spell) with the other Pleiades. She can also summon a large back of animated teddy bears with her spell, “La Bestia,” and combine them into one giant teddy bear with the spell, “La Bestia Rifare.”

A more mundane ability Mirai has is a proficiency for sewing, learned from years of repairing her large collection of teddy bears.

Sample Entry:

[Today, at a fairly early hour of the morning, anyone who picks up the phone can hear the ear-piercing, enraged shriek of an angry teenage girl.

If you can still hear after that, the girl continues speaking, at a lower volume, but still in an unhappy tone.]

Hey, listen up! I don’t know which idiot did it, but putting rotten milk on somebody’s doorstep is considered bullying, you know! That kind of thing can make people sick. Do it again, and Mirai-sama will have to punish you!

That said, if anyone else know where to get fresh milk, speak up. I’m not going to risk drinking this stuff again.

[The phone line goes quiet with not so much a click as a slam.]
