I have to agree with this
op-ed. Essentially he states the obvious: blogs are a form of self-indulgence and a place for exhibitionists to flex. Yes, fine. They also serve as a forum for people to debate ideas. Early news groups were much less about exhibitionism, and there is also variation by country. Some time ago, I remember seeing some statistics on the age difference between livejournal users in different countires. On average Russian LJ users were older than U.S. LJ users. (I can’t seem to find the table anymore on the lj site. So I am not a sure how accurate this is now.) Also my Russian friends tell me the distribution of content is quite different too. They say Russian blogs tend to have more discussion about current events and politics than they have seen in U.S. based blogs. If it is true, I expect it is because a larger portion of older people are blogging. I am sure sociologists are studying the cross-country variations in blogging as I write!
