Well, today was kinda shitty.
Backstory: I decided to take on the holiday show at my theatre as the operator. I was very hesitant about if I could pull it off, but need the money so decided to do it.
Fast Forward to last week. It's been a very crazy show to setup. To make it worse we've been installing a whole new audio system. That went pretty well, but has been very very busy and stressful.
Fast Forward again to Tuesday. We had our first day of tech, and to put it bluntly I fell flat on my face. It just went terribly. I talked to my boss then about the fact that I felt I'd bitten off more than I could chew. He said that he wanted me to stick with it, so I did.
Wednesday went a fair bit better, but was still real rough.
Then today came. This was the real test I was waiting for. It was our first full runthrough of the show. It went better, but still way way sub-par. I've been getting a lot of help, but I just don't think it's enough. After today's experience, it is clear to me that this is just to much show for me. I know where my shortcomings are, but I'm not going to delve into them all here.
I went back to my boss tonight and had to say that I can't do it. I mean, I could do it, but it wouldn't be the best for the show. This was my choice, in the interest of what's best for the show. My ego is thoroughly smashed, but I think that this is the correct decision.
Now I'm pretty sure that this is going to fuck me in terms of future work here. This is about the biggest bitch move you can pull, but as I said, I think it's better than trying to bullshit my way through things.
It creates a whole slew of other problems and awkward discussions. One thing is that I'm going to have to train in the new person taking over the show. Also figuring out the pay issues, and still taking care of infastructure, notes, etc... things related to this show since it'll be to hard to try and get a new person up to speed on the whole damn system.
I've never had to back out of a show like this my entire adult life. I see it as a failure, but also a learning experience.
Anyway, that is all for now.
