Dang.. it's been a rushed and hectic weekend at my place. Mad props to myself for not going insane. Ugh!
After work on Friday, I got the dining table moved out of the kitchen and the linoleum got pulled up in that area. Then I helped ARP paint her bathroom.
Saturday I woke up and ran to Lowe's bought 2 cabinets and some tiling supplies. When I brought the cabinets into the house...lucky me found out that the new cabinets DO NOT fit! The new cabinets being standard size are 1/2" taller than my actual current cabinets. Sigh. So I'm going to have to plank those or something to make them fit right. Scraping the floor took HOURS. But it was finally clean enough to tile on...
I barely got to sit down and eat some food before parents arrived. They immediately told me that I had bought the WRONG mortar tool, so ran back to Lowes at closing to get the right one. Pulled the baseboards off the walls and discussed some basic ideas about how we wanted to lay the tile. After laying out several different patterns, we resolved on the one we felt looked the best. It's the standard wood floor staggered pattern that we decided to lay. Then I realized that I still needed a few more items so I ran out to go borrow those from a friend. After all was said and done in bed by 1:30am.
I got up at 7:30am on Sunday to help my dad scrap and clean up the floor more. We did some chalk lines for reference and did the markups for where the cabinets would go. Then we found out that our tile cutter wasn't compatible with the tile I had chosen. Apparently I have REALLY hard tile...which I suppose I'll appreciate later. Made a run to Lowe's to attempt to find a replacement cutting wheel and pick up a diamond blade. Successfully returned to the house only to realize that the cutting wheel wouldn't fit on your cutting tool. Sigh.
Luckily, Diana had just woken up at that time and informed us that one of her friends lays tile professionally. Thankfully we were able to borrow a different cutting board which made short work of the tile cutting process. Then it was on to calculating out the correct mixture of water to mortar. Eventually we got the calcuation for 50lbs of mortar and 1.5 gallons of water figured out based on the containers that we had to use. Was an interesting process...
Mortar got mixed and tile got brought in and away we went. The dining floor finally was finally tiled at about 9pm last nite. This does not count grout...but I'm very pleased. It's really nice! Eventually I'll post some pics of the current progress.
Now I get to look forward to a similar weekend for the next month til all this flooring gets done.
Special shout outs go to the following people for thier assistance this past week. Each of you is wonderful and you were very much appreciated: Alan, Anna, Jody, and Kim.
On a side note... it was rather intriguing that while my parents were in town Diana also hosted her lingerie party. UGH! Less drama next week please!
